About us
The AGO is a ministerial department serving the Attorney General and the Solicitor General (the Law Officers). The Law Officers are the Government’s chief legal advisers. The Law Officers make important decisions that affect public life. Among other things, they decide whether to send criminal sentences that may be too low to the Court of Appeal; whether to open inquests into deaths (for example, the Attorney General made the decision to open new inquests into the deaths at Hillsborough); and are responsible for the Crown Prosecution Service and Serious Fraud Office in Parliament. The Office comprises around 40 multidisciplinary, engaged and high performing team members advising and supporting the Law Officers in all aspects of their work.

We welcome the additional £9.3 million in funding for our mission in the Chancellor’s budget last week. This will fund our work to combat serious financial crime and bring justice faster to victims. We will use this funding to: ✅ Set up a dedicated Asset Confiscation Enforcement team focused on uncovering and seizing assets specifically from convicted criminals. ✅ Expand our use of Technology Assisted Review, harnessing machine learning to prioritise and streamline case material. ✅ Build a cutting-edge Case Management System to transform how we progress cases and help deliver justice faster. These projects will help improve our efficiency and, through penalties and proceeds of crime recovery, continue to deliver a sizeable return on investment for the taxpayer.
New asset confiscation enforcement team, digital systems to track case progress and an upgrade to Serious Fraud Office (UK) disclosure technology capabilities have been outlined in the budget in a bid to crackdown on fraud.
