Sketchbook Challenge Day 27   Prompt – House For today’s prompt, House, I decided to step outside the box and try my hand at a collage. As a landscape architect, I couldn't resist focusing on the bigger picture—blending the house with its surrounding landscape. All the cuttings come from Issue 1, 2022 of Landscape, the journal of the Landscape Institute. I loved exploring how architecture and the environment can come together in harmony. Sketchbook Challenge Day 26: Prompt – Something from a museum. This small bowl, made from Blue John, a rare mineral found only in the mines around Castleton, Derbyshire, is becoming increasingly scarce. My sister, brother, and I clubbed together to buy it for our mum, who always loved admiring them in shop windows when we visited Castleton for a day out. I decided to outline and add shadow with an H pencil, then coloured it with gouache to capture the beautiful depth of the mineral. #SketchbookChallenge #BlueJohn #Derbyshire #GouacheArt #MuseumInspiration

Day 25: Sketchbook Challenge – Butterflies 🦋 Prompt is Butterflies! I didn’t have time to create something new as I’ve been out all day with just a pencil in hand. So here’s one I made earlier! This piece was part of a workshop about emotions. It was a mindfulness exercise where we explored the idea of “butterflies in the stomach” – a feeling many experience at the start of something new, like a workshop. Sketchbook Challenge Day 24:   Prompt – Ears Ears are for earrings! This is based on a photo taken this morning. The piercings at the top of my ear were done to celebrate my 60th birthday. My head is drawn in pencil with a rather severe new haircut, while the ear and earrings are in brush and 0.5 Unipen, with colour from Staedtler Pen 68. The pointy bit on the top lobe (turning into an elf, perhaps?!) is highlighted in white Posca pen. #SketchbookChallenge #EarArt #60AndFabulous #ArtInspiration #PoscaPens

Sketchbook Challenge Day 23:   Prompt – Cats Today, I’m pleased to say, “Here’s one I drew earlier!” A female cat illustration created for my book about the gender of French nouns. The drawings were deliberately quirky to make them memorable. While waiting at the dentist, I experimented with a thick 4B pencil to sketch our two black-and-white cats from a photo. Things quickly went downhill when I attempted to draw moving cats! However, I’m fairly happy with the single-line brush marker sketch of an imaginary sitting cat. #SketchbookChallenge #CatDrawings #FrenchNouns #QuirkyIllustrations #ArtistLife

Sketchbook Challenge Day 21   Prompt - Something You Saw on a Walk Today’s prompt took me to a garden where I came across a twisted branch that left me puzzled.   After some thought, I believe it might be an ancient branch of Wisteria.
