The world is witnessing an unprecedented displacement crisis – and the climate crisis is a big part of that. What can philanthropy do? To launch our special focus on 'Hope across borders: Refugees, local solutions, and local giving', Elisa Shoenberger, MBA argues this crisis should call philanthropy to the needs of climate-related migrants but to do this we need to center our practices around those impacted by climate change, and to do so from the start. 🌍 ⤵️

Agriculture has already consumed 40% of Earth’s land surface🌏 Now, rising demand for food, fuel, and fiber directly competes with biodiversity and climate imperatives to protect 30% of land and waters and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. As competition over land intensifies, historical inequities deepen. The largest 1% of farms now controls 70% of global farmland. There are solutions, but we need to ensure that these solutions are not siloed, or they can create unintended consequences. Meta's shift away from professional fact-checking demands a strategic rethinking of philanthropy's funding priorities. In his latest for Alliance magazine‘s monthly column Philanthropy wired, Gaston Wright points to a sobering reality: the estimated $700-900 million invested in civic tech platforms has yielded limited impact. Rather than continuing this approach, funders should prioritise sustainable investments in established digital advocacy infrastructure. From strengthening misinformation detection mechanisms to improving data transparency, discover how refocused funding priorities could protect digital civic spaces: https://lnkd.in/eJzzcj5F

🌏 Agriculture already consumes 40% of Earth’s land. As demand for food, fuel, and fiber grows, it competes with important efforts to protect and restore ecosystems. Meanwhile, the food system must adapt to feed 10 billion people by 2050 - without expanding its footprint. But a single-issue approach to food production and land use can create unintended consequences. 🐄 For example, livestock production methods that improve animal welfare can also increase carbon emissions. Thus, reducing consumer demand for animal-based protein must be a key part of the solution as well. With few ‘win-win-win’ solutions available, a systems approach is needed. Coolfood is part of the World Resources Institute's framework to ensure our food, land, and water solutions work for everyone.
