Following the nationwide red wind warning issued as a result of Storm Éowyn in the Republic of Ireland, ALS has been monitoring the situation closely. With staff and customer safety at the heart of ALS, we have taken the decision to close the Dublin office on Friday 24th January 2025. This will mean there will be no one on site to receive samples and no courier collections on this date. We are planning on opening as normal from 09:00 on Monday 27th January 2025, but we will continue to review the situation and provide further updates if required. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause our clients and appreciate your understanding as we take necessary precautions during this weather event. We will process any samples received today as normal. However, flights and transport arrangements are subject to change based on government guidance. Please contact your Customer Service Co-Ordinator directly for any further information during this time. Clients can also contact our Client Services Team via the contact details on our website. https://lnkd.in/gyjSMTJs

ALS is pleased to share that our highly experienced Cryptosporidium analysis laboratory in Coventry has recently been granted additional UKAS accreditation for the analysis of Giardia in water, one of a very small number of laboratories in the UK that hold accreditation for this method. Our Coventry laboratory has also been granted ISO 17025 accreditation, to analyse samples according to the ISO standard method for Cryptosporidium and Giardia (ISO 15553) which is suitable for our clients who may require analysis of samples from other countries or other regulatory requirements. In line with our ongoing efforts to provide industry leading analysis, this accreditation now means our Coventry laboratory can provide a comprehensive, accredited analytical portfolio for both Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are parasites that are found worldwide in a variety of vertebrate hosts, including humans. They can cause enteric disease in humans and livestock, often by transmission from water sources. Further information on Giardia and its effects can be found on the government and NHS website below ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ds8cFQhC

After 15½ memorable years with ALS I will be retiring at the end of December and passing the baton over to Angela Turner, who will head up our Sales and Client Service Teams for UK Food business and Lucy Bowen, who will do likewise for our UK Environmental business unit. I have been fortunate to work with some great businesses in both the food and environmental industries during this time and I would like to take this final opportunity to thank all our clients for supporting ALS over the years. ‘Client first’ is an integral part of our DNA and I hope that we have repaid your trust in us with the service we have given you. On behalf of everyone at ALS, may I wish you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

The UK’s Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has announced that guidelines for monitoring and mitigating PFAS have been updated. Water companies are expected to consider the effect of combined concentrations of PFAS chemicals of interest in drinking water and include “sum of” 48 PFAS. In addition, monitoring by water companies has highlighted a further PFAS of potential concern – 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB), which has now been added as the 48th PFAS on the DWI’s list of PFAS chemicals of interest. Companies operating in the UK are expected to implement “sum of” PFAS reporting, as well as monitoring of 6:2 FTAB by 1 January 2025. To help our clients stay informed on the rapidly changing PFAS global regulatory environment, we have just published an update on important new and upcoming PFAS legislation in the UK, EU, US & Canada.
