Unlocking the Future of Sustainable Cooling in India In September last year, Shravya Yerram-Garuda and Shivali Mathur represented Amberside Advisors at a regional workshop on ‘Cooling India’s Cities’ in Vijayawada, hosted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Tabreed India, and The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The event provided a platform to explore the immense potential of District Cooling systems in transforming urban cooling infrastructure in India. The recently published report from Tabreed captures the key outputs of this workshop, focusing on Public-Private Partnerships, innovative business models, regulatory support, and the economic and environmental benefits of District Cooling. 👉 See the link in the comment to download full report and explore the findings. Reflecting on the workshop and the report, Shravya shared her insights on the financial sector's critical role in making District Cooling projects scalable and bankable. “Structured investment frameworks and a focus on de-risking projects through transparency and governance can catalyse private sector participation, unlocking the full potential of sustainable cooling solutions,” she said. Shivali added her perspective on the practical implications for developers and investors, emphasising that “The insights from the report highlight the need for collaboration between stakeholders, including governments, developers, and funders, to create innovative frameworks that deliver both environmental and economic benefits. District Cooling represents an exciting intersection of sustainability and urban innovation, but it requires strategic alignment to achieve its potential.” Together, these reflections underline the importance of aligning financial confidence with policy and technical innovation to drive the adoption of sustainable cooling solutions in India’s rapidly growing urban landscapes. 🌏 Let’s collaborate to accelerate greener, smarter cities! #Sustainability #DistrictCooling #EnergyEfficiency #GreenGrowth #UrbanDevelopment #InvestmentOpportunities

Interesting reflections from Shivali, our Associate for Energy Transition, on her recent trip to India and on some exciting opportunities emerging in the district cooling space, which Amberside Advisors is exploring in collaboration with our colleagues from Steer India. Shivali Mathur and Shravya Yerram-Garuda are the co-founders of the Women in District Cooling | India Chapter group which endeavours to connect female leaders in this field and facilitate collaboration on the district cooling initiatives. Stay tuned for more on that in the New Year! #Wearesteer #DistrictCooling #Sustainability #WomenInDistrictCooling
Reflecting on a truly inspiring and enriching 2024 trip to India, where I had the opportunity to meet with my incredible colleagues from Steer India. In addition to joining a regional workshop dedicated to District Cooling organized by Tabreed India, I also had a great pleasure to visit Steer’s office in Delhi. It’s always exciting to collaborate across borders, and this visit reinforced how essential partnerships are in tackling the challenges of tomorrow. 🌟 It was great to meet Vaibhav Gupta, Sonia and the team. Thank you to Tanu Raj for capturing those candid moments over lunch, and to everyone who made this journey memorable. Enjoyed chai with Yashu Soni in a kulhad—a traditional, recyclable clay tea cup. This small yet meaningful detail beautifully reflects Steer's commitment to sustainability, perfectly aligning with our values and mission to make the world more sustainable. With an ambitious goal to become carbon neutral by 2030 (Our commitment to Net Zero | Steer), feels nice to be part of a team that genuinely cares about the environment and takes action to make a difference. 🌱 One particularly inspiring highlight was connecting with some of the members of the @WomeninDistrictCoolingIndia group during this trip. The conversations were energizing, filled with ideas on driving innovation and inclusion in this critical sector. Another highlight was the site visit to The Prakasam Barrage, an architectural marvel stretching across the Krishna River, connecting Vijayawada and Guntur districts. This iconic bridge not only serves as a road bridge but also adds to the Venetian charm of Vijayawada, with its three canals running through the city. This picturesque backdrop provided the perfect setting to exchange ideas with Shravya Yerram-Garuda, the co-founder of the @Women in District Cooling India, further enriching the experience. To join the group, please connect with us on https://lnkd.in/eNdQVhcC Moments like these, from team meetings to shared chai and site visits, remind me of the power of collaboration and the importance of women’s leadership in shaping the future of our industries. Feeling truly inspired to carry these lessons forward. Together, we can build a more sustainable and inclusive tomorrow. 💙🌏 #SteerIndia #WomenInDistrictCooling #Sustainability #Collaboration #Empowerment

We are delighted to hear that Westfield Energy Recovery Facility (WERF) in Fife has successfully managed its first fire. Congratulations to Viridor, Equitix and Kanadevia Inova for achieving this significant milestone within scheduled timescale. Amberside Advisors had previously supported Equitix with buyside financial modelling, through to financial close, related to the acquisition of WERF and subsequent formation of a Joint Venture with Viridor under Westfield Energy Recovery Limited (WERL), which was formed to oversee the construction and operation of the EfW Plant. Once fully operational, the site is expected to process approximately 240,000 tonnes of residual black bag waste and power around 55,000 homes. Further plans for WERF include potential heat network and carbon capture projects in the future. #EnergyFromWaste #EfW #FinancialAdvisory

How do we pay for Britain’s infrastructure? With the benefit of our work across the infrastructure finance sector, and supported by one of Steer’s top transport experts, Nicola Kane, we provided insights into Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) policy team in advance of the panel session referred to below. The participants discussed that while the government was happy for the private sector to fund UK energy, digital and to a lesser extent water, opportunities for private finance in rail - beyond High Speed 1 and rolling stock - have been limited and potentially a missed opportunity. The proposed pooling of pension funds was discussed – the conclusion was that progress is limited by delays in planning and the lack of a pipeline of investible opportunities rather than any unavailability of capital, though it was suggested it that investors with a higher risk tolerance than pension funds, could help accelerate the adoption of new technology into infrastructure. Spring 2025 will see the Government's 10-year infrastructure strategy, which may well reflect the National Infrastructure Commission's forward assessment, Darryl Murphy made the case for accompanying granular delivery plans to give investors comfort that the priorities to deliver that strategy have been considered. I liked the discussion about the need for a “Brian Cox” of infrastructure – one who could make the positive case for infrastructure as we did in the sixties to support the rapid rollout of pylons.
For the UK to meet its ambitions to transform energy, water and transport at the speed and scale needed, the country needs to invest much more than it currently does. Join us on 19 November from 8:30am – 10:00am to explore: 👉 What's the current plan to pay for the infrastructure the UK needs? 👉 How can we reduce the need for public sector investment? And what's the best way to engage private finance? 👉 What can the treasury do to better control the cost of delivery?
