As 2024 comes to a close, AmplifyChange are reflecting on our work over the past year. In addition to our grant-making, we focused on building linkages between organisations and further supporting organisational strengthening. By using a private interactive platform called the AmplifyChange Learn Community, we hosted a series of skills-building trainings and connected grantee partners to each other. Context-specific work is key In both Cameroon and Zimbabwe, the advocacy issues central to the movements are considered taboo and highly stigmatised. However, with AmplifyChange funding, organisations could approach these topics in context-appropriate and culturally sensitive ways, allowing for a bigger potential for advocacy success. Supporting diverse advocacy approaches Advocacy embodies a range of approaches, from policy change to social norm transformation to raising individual and community awareness of SRHR issues. AmplifyChange allows for organisations to determine the advocacy strategies that work best for their goals, and to adapt those strategies as needed. In Cameroon, collecting evidence on human rights abuses against the LGBTIQ community allowed for better advocacy for healthcare access and legal support. In Zimbabwe, building up community support alongside direct advocacy to Parliamentarians allowed for a holistic approach to policy reform. Solidarity and movement building Movement building is a cornerstone to any large-scale advocacy work. In Zimbabwe, the movement for abortion rights seeks to improve existing laws and implement more comprehensive access. In Cameroon, the LGBTIQ movement seeks better recognition and support of the community at the political, healthcare, and community levels. With AmplifyChange support, these movements were better connected, aligned on priorities, and could effectively collaborate. All this supported building solidarity in their advocacy work. Strong organisations strengthen movements In both Zimbabwe and Cameroon, the research showed that providing organisational strengthening support and funding contributed positively the overall movement’s ability to advocate for change. Organisations who had strengthened their organisation’s governance, financial management, and capacity could better manage their projects and contribute to advocacy goals.
