Unique aquarium & conservation centre with only British marine life, focussed on sustainability & community engagement

About us

Anglesey Sea Zoo Marine Conservation Centre is a uniquely all native aquarium housing only British species, with water pumped directly from the sea, carrying out breeding programmes for some of the rarest animals in our British seas and leading by example on sustainability and conservation issues by engaging the public and the community and the wider audience in positive environmental change. As a conservation and environmental centre, we have been organising regular community beach-cleans and litter surveys, contributing to the Beachwatch global database for marine litter, for over 14 years. As an Environmental Hub for Keep Wales Tidy we also lend out kit to local community groups to carry out their own clean-ups. We co-ordinate voluntary rescue of injured or stranded marine animals and treat and rehabilitate them for release. We carry out breeding and conservation programmes including our Lobster Hatchery of Wales where we breed and release common lobsters to maintain healthy local populations and endangered species breeding programmes. We are the only institution to house both British seahorse species and spiny lobsters, all of which are now almost extinct in the wild around the UK, for eventual re-release to re-establish wild populations of these almost extinct iconic species.

  • We haven’t given a turtle update for a while, but rest assured we have been very busy on our turtle rescue projects over the summer with lots of refurbs and improvements! We have managed to secure enough funding to insulate and upgrade the rehabilitation facility and tanks, and invested in exciting new air source heat pump technology to help heat the water. ‘Tonni’ our loggerhead was released by the Royal Navy in the Azores in September leaving us for now with just ‘Rhossi’ our second rescued Kemps Ridley Turtle - who was found cold stranded on Rhosniegr beach last winter. ‘Rhossi’ initially had significant injuries and carapace damage which took a while to heal but we are delighted to say that they have been given a full bill of health by Celyn Marshall our amazing turtle vet from Bennett-Williams Vets here on Anglesey! How cool is that turtle XRay?! 😍 We are now in the process of arranging ‘Rhossi’s’ repatriation to the Gulf of Mexico - the only place in the world where this critically endangered species still has a stronghold. We are excited to be working with many of the same amazing organisations as we did for the successful repatriation of our first Kemps Ridley ‘Tally’ who was released there in September 2022. Huge thanks to our USA colleagues including TURTLES FLY TOO, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) , Dr.Joe and his team at Houston Zoo and the truly awesome Dr. Donna Shaver! Once again we want to say a huge ‘thankyou’ to our wonderful supporters and everyone who has donated and continues to donate towards this crucial work. Sadly due to increasing sea temperatures and climate change, we are expecting more rescued turtles in our facility this winter - but we are ready for them! Lwcus i Rhossi dim dyna oedd y stori gan fod cafodd Meg i hyd i’r crwban pendew kemp yma sydd yn rhan o rhywogaeth mwyaf prin yn y byd. O ganlyniad i darganfyddiad anhygoel Meg, caofodd Rhossi eu achub gan y ni, Sw Môr Môn, ac y gobaith ydy eu hedfan i Texas yn y dyfodol agos i’w ailsefydlu yno. Rydan ni yn ddiolchgar iawn i Lwsi i siarad i Elis am siwrne arbenning yma a am ymdrech aruthrol Rhossi i frwydro ymlaen. 😀🐢 Mae’n bwysig cofio fod rydan ni yn dibynnu ar cyfraniadau i wneud ein gwaith achub a adsefydlu crwbanod i ddigwydd a felly os ydych chi eisiau helpu fod yn rhan o’r lwyddianau ni efo rhyddhau y crwabnod môr trofannol yn nol yn yr hinsawdd maent yn fod yn a i’w cynnal nhw pan maent yma, gewch chi rhoid arain trwy defnyddio y linc yma: https://lnkd.in/e7zVbhZf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🐢😀This is a clip from the program ‘Newffion’, which was broadcasted this morning, showing the story of Rhossi who came to Wales in a terrible storm all the way from the Gulf of Mexico to land in Rhosneigr in a cold shock close to death. Lucky for Rhossi, that wasn't the story as Meg found this Kemp's ridley turtle which is part of the rarest species in the world. As a result of Meg's incredible discovery, Rhossi was rescued by us, Anglsesey Sea Zoo, and the hope is to fly them to Texas in the near future to reestablish them there. We are very grateful to Lwsi for speaking to Elis about this special journey and for Rhossi's tremendous effort to fight on. 😊🐢 It is important to remember that we depend on contributions to make our rescue and rehabilitation work with turtles happen and so if you want to help be part of our success with releasing the tropical sea turtles back into the climate they are supposed to be in and to support them when they are here, you can donate by using this link: https://gofund.me/d15957d7

  • This is a tadpole fish, or Raniceps Raninus. They like cold water, and get their name from the fact they look like a really big tadpole. They do not turn into frogs. -- Mae'r pysgodyn penbwl, neu Raniceps Raninus yn hoffi dŵr oer, ac yn cael eu henw o'r ffaith eu bod yn edrych fel penbwl mawr iawn. Nid ydynt yn troi yn llyffantod.
