As we end another period, we have seen the consequences of rising violence in our schools. Last week, a 15yr old boy tragically lost his life on a school premises and on the same day, a 14yr old girl was convicted of attempted murder on a school premises in South Wales. Over the last year, I have reported on seven lockdowns in schools where threatening behaviour has been used. Five of those incidents have been across South Wales and two in Sheffield. This doesn't include activities outside of school premises such as the tragic events which unfolded in Southport. Security in our schools is an ever increasing topic where there are no boundaries. An attack could happen anywhere in a school and at any time. It is vital that drills are up to speed and everybody is rehearsed for any event. Security reviews need to include Master Key Suites and ensuring that the school locking system is set up correctly to include the correct permissions, the choice cylinders such as anti-barricade cylinders and on a restricted platform. It is vital that a member of teaching staff or a student of any age is in a position to be able to form a physical barrier between themselves and an attacker without the use of a key. Nothing is more important than the safety of our children in schools, which should be safe environments for them to learn and grow. Nobody knows when an incident will occur and by who. A current student, an ex-student, someone radicalised or even an aggrieved parent. Any of these would once have been laughable but in today's world, are a very real threat.  If you work in a school, board of governors or work in an authority where you think some advice might be worth it (we do it for free across the UK), drop us a line. To say, it will never happen to us can no longer be used and the statistics are proving that point. I'm sure all schools involved were saying the same thing. Last summer, we had the pleasure of working with two schools in South Wales and improved their security and placed in Master Key Suites that gave complete safety to all in the unlikely event of a lockdown whilst at the same time, configured the system so that teaching staff keep full control of the school. The trigger point for them to talk with us was the impending legislation that is "Martyn's Law, which hopefully will be passed into UK legislation this year. This will mean all security aspects will be under the spotlight, including our schools. Whilst Martyn's Law doesn't include locking systems (wrongly in our view) it should be considered implied task and an area to focus as in lockdown scenario, doors need to be locked quickly and efficiently in what will be a time sensitive situation. With yet another school going into lockdown yesterday in South Wales, it is becoming more apparent that Martyn's Law is going to play it's part in keeping our children safe and ensuring an secure environment they deserve. One of the biggest tools to keep both students and staff safe alongside drills and is being overlooked is an efficient and robust locking system, i.e a Master Key Suite. When correctly designed and implemented, it ensures that control remains with the staff of the school. It's about key control, locking down quickly and fast access into any area the use of anti-barricade cylinders so that any would be attacker cannot barricade themselves into a room, either on their own or with a defenceless person. Yesterday, by the time the police arrived, an intruder could not be found and neither could a weapon. It goes to show that despite security arrangements on a day to day basis, an intruder can still access and depart a school (if not a hoax), an attack can happen at any time and at any point in the school buildings. This is the importance of capturing every door in the school and placing it onto a Master Key Suite. Where teaching staff snd drills want the students to go may not always be possible, therefore, the closest area for safety is important, and to get a physical barrier between intruder and students/staff closed and locked...... without the use of a key. During last year, we have worked with a couple of schools in the South Wales area and have implemented a Master Key Suite into their security matrix, at primary and comprehensive school level, all "zoned" out for efficiency and fitted with anti-barricade cylinders fitted for security. Due to serious incidents in school in recent times, it is now common place for them to have a ‘lockdown’ policy in place to hopefully reduce the loss of life or injury to their students and staff. The fundamentals of any lockdown is to allow the doors to be locked internally in order to form a physical barrier to prevent entry and ‘buy time’ in the event of a terror attack or imminent threat without using a key. There is also a requirement a communication system to control the situation effectively in the event of a serious incident taking place. The master key systems we supply allow the students to lock any doors from the internal side without using a key, thus allowing a physical barrier to be formed without a key holder such as a teacher been gpresent, whilst at the same time, allow the teaching staff to enter the rooms with a key if they are locked out, even if the thumbturn is being held by using anti-barricade cylinders. It also means they can escape from a locked door to safety if th need arises. "Classroom" cylinders which once were an option to be supplied to schools are now longer fit for purpose in terms of a lockdown. They are currently fitted into many schools around the UK. The problem now is that type of cylinder does not allow the student to lock the doors from the inside – they can only unlock them. This is a problem when moving into a lockdown scenario. We ensure that our Master Key Suites going into schools meet every need required and focussing on fire, internal barricading, into classrooms, self harm and lockdowns. We configure the schools zones which gives control as necessary, and ensure the Master key Suites are on a restricted profile which aids in key control.
