As the Hinkley Point C turbine hall takes shape, have a look behind the scenes at the Arabelle turbine for HPC while it was being assembled at our Belfort factory. Equipped with the largest last-stage blade ever made, the two turbines will generate 3.2GW of low-carbon electricity for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in the UK – enough to power around six million homes. We marked a significant milestone this week, as we commenced production of the 700 MW steam turbine for Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant (Unit 6) in India. The turbine is part of the six units for India’s NPCIL domestic nuclear program, with phase 1 being developed at Gorakhpur (Units 1 to 4) and Kaiga (Units 5 and 6). The turbines are being manufactured in India, supporting the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative aimed at promoting the country’s self-reliance. Three units will be manufactured at our Sanand facility, and three at BHEL’s Haridwar facility under our License and Technology Transfer Agreement with BHEL. The team held a traditional Pooja ceremony to mark the beginning of LP Casing fabrication activity. Interesting discussions at ‘India’s Nuclear Energy Future’ conference in Mumbai this week, organized by Nuclear Business Platform . Our team, including Cedric Couffignal, Nuclear New Build Business Leader, and Beena Kothadia, India Country Leader, had great conversations around Small Modular Reactors, Bharat Small Reactors, large reactors, and private industry participation in nuclear power plants. Tarun Gugnani GE, Sales Director for India, presented on our engineering and manufacturing facilities in India centred around “Make In India”, while Gabor Szenes, Global Sales Leader, participated in a panel discussion on the broader involvement of private developers and suppliers in the Indian power sector. He shared his insights on private investors and owners’ participation in nuclear plants around the globe. We’re excited to see the first major component of the Hinkley Point C Unit 1 turbine hall arriving on-site after a journey by rail, land, and sea from our factory in Belfort. At the plenary meeting of the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs in Brussel last week our team was encouraged by the movement towards Small Modular Reactors on the European market. Following the selection of the first 9 SMR projects, corresponding Project Working Groups involving partners from the Technical Working Groups are being established. We believe the joint action plan will feasibly facilitate and accelerate the development, demonstration, and deployment of the viable SMRs. Arabelle Solutions supports the EU’s call for collaboration among nuclear industry stakeholders, including research and financial institutions. Nuclear power plants require powerful pumps! Our concrete volute pumps cool the steam coming out of the turbine in the condenser and can have a shaft line of up to 40 metres long!
