About us
Architype Ltd is an architectural practice working from offices in Hereford, London and Edinburgh. The UK’s leading architects for sustainable buildings, we design with an energy and commitment that changes lives for the better, by creating places and spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them, and on the immediate and wider environment. Our remit is broad and always exciting. Whether we are working on a private residence or a factory, a hospice, school or university, we know we’re influencing people’s lives and that the buildings we design will be used for many years to come. It’s our conviction that we should push at boundaries, that there is a better way. It’s our intention that clients are liberated and empowered by the process of working with us and by the buildings we produce for them. Wherever possible, we carry out a period of thorough consultation, an immersion in the issues and needs of everyone who will occupy the building. We involve them in the process of describing their ambition and developing a plan that is informed by everyone’s contributions. This ensures we deliver the building they have a right to, a place they will be proud of. We love what we do - the profound sense of engagement that comes with each new project, the union of great design and credible sustainability, the pleasure we can bring, and the ripple effect each completed building has on society.

Co-owners from our Hereford studio recently visited the Wye Valley Trust Community Diagnostic Centre. Construction has commenced on-site, the timber frame is complete, and most windows are now installed. The Wye Valley Community Diagnostic Centre is a 1,140m², two-story building designed in collaboration with Medical Architecture for the Wye Valley NHS Trust. It features a simple, flexible layout with a bright, airy double-height waiting area leading to high-tech scanning suites on the ground floor and consulting and staff spaces upstairs. This CDC will play a critical role in reducing pressure on the main hospital by providing additional diagnostic facilities, including MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound, enabling earlier diagnosis of critical conditions. We look forward to watching this project progress on-site! Read more about it here - https://lnkd.in/eC5AaV4G

We’re excited to announce that planning permission has been granted for a transformative new 540-place all-through school at Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth, Wales. This new school will bring together primary, secondary, and post-16 education all under one roof, replacing the current separate campuses. The facilities will include community spaces, an Additional Learning Needs (ALN) centre, wellbeing provision, and an all-weather pitch. The Passivhaus-designed building will feature a CLT (cross-laminated timber) superstructure and other bio-based materials, significantly reducing its embodied carbon (target <600 kg CO₂/m²). It will be 100% electric, with heat pumps for hot water and an extensive PV array to generate renewable electricity. Expected completion is 2028 and we look forward to watching this project progress into the next stages.
