  • Conceived and installed more than five decades ago to train vessel crews in navigation, the tank simulator was a technological masterpiece featuring simulated waves, wind, and currents for practicing docking maneuvers at a harbor wall or jetty. Positioned at one end was a podium complete with a seat, emulating a ship's bridge. Each vessel in the simulator boasted a bow-mounted camera linked to a monitor on the podium, operating in an era before computers — relying on an advanced TV system. Helmsmen, gazing at the monitor, experienced a perspective mirroring the actual view from a ship's bridge. A diverse fleet of vessels awaited selection, seamlessly integrated into the esteemed Naval Architecture Series. Armfield distributed these groundbreaking simulators to maritime cities worldwide, with the first making waves at Plymouth Marine Training College. Another found a home at a college in Hull, dedicated to the training of trawlermen. London's Sir John Cass College (now the London Metropolitan University) also embraced this technological advancement. The journey of innovation and knowledge extended its reach across oceans, leaving an indelible mark on maritime training. #armfieldltd #university #teaching #engineeringeducation #trawlermen #simulation #history #maritime #naval #wavegeneration #metropolitanuniversity #plymouth #hull

A fantastic day of testing for our HND Civil Engineering students recently for their Hydrology, Fluids & Hydraulics module! They completed tests on losses in bends and tested through a Venturi tube, checking for total head readings. Some great results obtained and calculated, and the students will be able to apply and use these skills in their roles going forward. Many thanks for the continued support from Armfield Limited, Martin Dewey, Adam McArthur, John Quirk #SEIoT #IoT #civilengineering Lewis O'Callaghan Charlotte Brown
