Drawing inspiration from Flemish architectural traditions, this Georgian farmhouse in Northern Ireland embraces craftsmanship, simplicity, and natural oak with fine carved detailing. Artichoke was invited to design and create a kitchen, back kitchen, sweeping oak staircase in the hall, pine library, dressing room, and all architectural joinery for this exceptional home. Working with a client who holds a profound appreciation for the art of making, we realised their vision through the finest materials and the skill of our craftspeople. Set amidst nature, this timeless residence marries historical character with refined modernity. From bespoke joinery framing the spaces to the Serpentine window illuminating the staircase, this project is a bridge between past, present, and future—a lasting expression of design and craft. Why is inspiring the next generation crucial for the future of our craft? At Artichoke, we feel it's not just crucial, it is our duty. Why? The decline in master furniture makers over the past 150 years, from 100,000 to just around 1,000 helps explain our passion for sustaining our craft. Our commitment is not just in what we create, but in empowering the people who create it. By passing on this knowledge, we make sure that the artistry and precision of handcrafted furniture are preserved for generations to come. It's not just precision, it is also the art of innovation. Fresh perspectives and ideas from young artisans infuse our craft with new life, blending classic techniques with modern design to create pieces that are both timeless and relevant. In an age where mass production can compromise quality and sustainability, the principles upheld by master furniture makers—durability, meticulous craftsmanship, and attention to detail—are more important than ever. By nurturing these values in the next generation, we champion a more sustainable and thoughtful approach to design. The art of furniture-making is part of our cultural identity and creative economy. Beautiful, bespoke pieces that last across generations enhance our cultural fabric and stimulates economic growth. Last but not least, becoming a master furniture maker offers personal fulfilment and a sense of community. It is a path of continuous learning, artistic expression and dedication to excellence. At Artichoke, we are proud to inspire and support the next generation of artisans through workshops, apprenticeships, and the New Makers' Conference. Together, we can make sure that the legacy of handcrafted luxury interiors continues to thrive. Making history to preserve our future. We believe that creating quality pieces that last can have a significant positive impact on the environment. Artichoke’s Managing Director, Ben Lihou, shared our vision on sustainability at the New Makers’ Conference this May, highlighting the urgency of better industry practices with thought-provoking statistics: 22 million small furniture items are discarded annually in the UK alone. Also 150 years ago there were over 100,000 master furniture makers in London alone. Now? Just a few hundred. It’s a dying art but we are committed to ensuring the art remains. Ben drew parallels to fast furniture and the transformation seen in the fashion industry, where companies like Patagonia have championed quality and longevity – being simultaneously better for the planet and the brand. He emphasised that if we build the best products with the best service and constantly improve, the furniture-making industry can and should become a leader in sustainability. One of Ben's key messages was the need to reawaken the appreciation for well-made, durable products. He noted that just as the Sistine Chapel's ceiling has stood the test of time, our furniture can too. However, to achieve this we must address two challenges: 1. Consumer willingness to opt for quality. 2. Developing and sustaining the necessary artisan skills. With cabinetmaking at the highest level being a rare but prized art, Ben pointed out that the digital age offers a fertile ground for a resurgence in artisan-making. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, driven by authenticity and storytelling, can celebrate the craftsmanship involved in quality making. We are committed to sustainability not only in terms of longevity, our daily practices and the materials that we use, but also by inspiring the next generation of makers. This is why we believe that The New Makers’ Conference and our partnership with The Furniture Makers' Company is so meaningful. We hope Ben’s talk and this topic nudges the bar slightly higher whilst creating a kinder environmental standard for others to be inspired by. #NewMakersConference #Sustainability #Craftsmanship #FurnitureMaking #CreativeTalent #IndustryInsights
