Updates

  • We are thrilled that the inspiring work our Young Cultural Changemakers have achieved in the first year of the programme has been acknowledged by the Children & Young People Now Awards – we have been shortlisted for The Youth Volunteering and Social Action Award. Working across 5 locations identified as Priority Places by Arts Council England, young changemakers in Arun, Dover, Slough, the New Forest and the Isle of Wight, are empowered to lead on significant creative projects in their local area. The programme responds to conversations with young people, where they have articulated their hopes, dreams and what they’d like to change about where they live. It then connects them with artists to explore and communicate ideas, as well as the opportunity to undertake training and development opportunities that support their futures. They are then given funding that enables them to plan, organise and deliver creative youth-led projects that make a lasting difference in their communities. We look forward to celebrating their hard work as well as our own teams at the awards ceremony on Thursday 28 November.

  • October is ADHD Awareness Month (more information at https://lnkd.in/gA86FYy ) – a time dedicated to raise awareness, break down misconceptions, and celebrate the incredible strengths of those who have ADHD. At Artswork, we prioritise empathy and inclusion, and in alignment with this year’s theme, “Awareness is Key!”, we invited a young person- Oakley, to share his own lived experience of ADHD to speak at our staff meeting last month.  Oakley guided us into his world, sharing valuable insights that were eye-opening and inspiring. Here's what our staff members had to say about their takeaways and learnings from this powerful session: "This was a brilliant session – I learned so much, particularly around how to support and enable neurodivergent people in ways that don’t make them feel that they are being singled out. One tiny example out of many gems - Oakley’s feedback on how the usual rainbow-coloured fidget toys designed for young children aren’t going to appeal to everyone was so helpful, and so obvious now I think about it! Thank you, Oakley, for your bravery and honesty."  “Oakley explained (and demonstrated) so well what happens in his head.  It really helped me to better understand people I have in my life who have ADHD, some of whom are not yet able to articulate as clearly as Oakley.  This has really impacted the way I can more positively support them.” “The most powerful take away from the session for me was how ADHD not only impacts concentration in formal learning sessions but how it also makes sleeping so difficult. My other comment would be the impact being able to deliver it had on Oakley- he reported back to his careers adviser that . ‘Showing up for his presentation made him feel like his voice 'counted'.”    “Young people don't want to feel singled out for having ADHD, so always allow them to quietly fidget with a toy, or use headphones when appropriate. ADHD doesn't cause disruptive behaviour, failure to accommodate ADHD causes disruptive behaviour.” “That there isn't a 'one-size fits all way' to make things more accessible for those with ADHD, and the best thing to do is ask someone how you can help to aid their experience in a respectful and private way.” “The act of listening to a young person is an intervention in itself. It's not enough, on its own. But it's not nothing. It acts on both the speaker and the listener. Oakley almost glowed with the experience of being listened to. We were gifted powerful learning - it's one thing to read about behaviours associated with ADHD (e.g. impulsivity, forgetfulness, distractibility, emotional intensity…) - Oakley gave us a real experience of his behaviours, authentically and generously.” We’re grateful for opportunities like this that deepen our understanding and support us in creating more inclusive environment.
