This is so beautiful and ASIGE is so excited to be a member of this wonderful family of young innovators. Thank you for all the support Innovator International
Meet Dorcas - what's her story? 'ASIGE (Advocacy for Social Inclusion and Girls’ Education) is on a mission to transform elephant grass into a range of durable and stylish products, from shopping bags to lampshades. I have a few nuggets of advice to impart…As a young entrepreneur, I encourage others to pursue their dreams with passion and determination. Remember, setbacks are inevitable, but with perseverance and the right support, you can overcome challenges and achieve your goals. Share your ideas, seek mentorship, and believe in the power of innovation to create a better future for all. People can and will discourage you – but don’t look back on your fails as fails. Look at what you could have done better to do better in future. Always try new things, take the leap. One day you will sit down and realise you too are a successful CEO of a thriving business because YOU made it so.' Valentina G. Lozano Eltice Kuna Langmia and Aishwarya Vemagiri did an amazing work in empowering 65 vocational skills training girls at ASIGE with technology, financial and business literacy skills. Our girls are now confident and ready to impact all the skills on their businesses. Your hard work in Ghana has given a sustainable livelihood for the young women, their families and communities. We appreciate the knowledge you invested on these young mothers. A big thank you to you three at Women Rising Organization (WRO) and Washington and Lee University.
Warning: very long reflection!! "I'm so proud of you for being here." This was a phrase I repeated often during my work in Ghana, both to the incredible women I worked with and to myself. To them, because as single mothers, drop-outs and talented individuals who faced poverty they continued to strive for their dreams. To me, because as a first-generation student and woman of color I understand, to my own extent, the efforts required to break the cycles of poverty as I experienced it myself leaving the rural zones of Colombia. Today, I am filled with gratitude and hope as I reflect on 'Project Uplift: Vocational Skill Training for Sustainable Livelihoods,' a project close to my heart and that reflects the hard work, knowledge and passion I have acquired for the past couple of years. As the co-founders of Women Rising Organization (WRO), Eltice Kuna Langmia, Aishwarya Vemagiri and I have designed and implemented this initiative in the Upper East Region of Ghana, aiming to empower women through Vocational and Professional Advancement training (VPA), sustainable business foundations, and crucial skills like financial and technological literacy. At WRO, we strongly advocate for localization in international interventions. In our project, as we continued exploring this approach we encountered three main challenges along the way: - Language and cultural barriers: Due to the levels of education and exposure of the women we often needed translation from a local person if we wanted to properly deliver our content. Teaching us we needed to unlearn and dissect the traditional formal ways of delivering information. - Enough planning is never enough as unexpected issues will always arise: from power shortage, network issues, to climate complications. We needed to be adaptable and resourceful. - Western practices often limited our understanding of "community work" in the global south, hence our capacity to connect with those we are trying to help. Redefining our practices and being observant to what community meant to these women inmensily helped us connect and deliver the project. Despite all these, Eltice, Aishwarya and I successfully completed and delivered our project to over 65 women in the zones of Bongo, Sumbrungu and Bolga. I want to personally thank ASIGE for working with us along the way, for trusting WRO, our project and our commitment to contribute to women's rights. To Washington and Lee University for supporting our project and guiding us along the way and to every person that listened to me rant about this project over the past couple months, I hope you are ready to listen to the many more projects to come! This project is more than just a professional milestone, it's a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the shared journey of empowerment. Together, we are creating a future where every woman has the opportunity to succeed. #WomenEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment #VocationalTraining #FemaleEmpowerment #WomenRising
