How we chose the name Attio 🚀 Naming a startup is hard. It’s the foundation of your brand, your first impression on potential customers, and a name you’ll say countless times a day. But with 362M+ domains already taken, how do you find something original? When we set out to name our startup, we had three key criteria: - Unique: something that stood out in a crowded space. - Memorable: easy to say, spell, and recall. - Available as a .com: a non-negotiable for us. So, we got creative and explored every possibility. First, we looked at premium one-word domains. They don’t come cheap—many started in the six-figure range. As a pre-seed startup at the time, that wasn’t viable for us. Time for a new approach. Next, we experimented with compound words, much like Dropbox or PayPal. We made a spreadsheet of words, categorized them, and checked availability. But nothing felt right. So, we took a different route: making up words. After countless iterations—exploring phonetic patterns, running domain searches, and trusting our instincts—we shortlisted eight names: Neve. Rifio. Simira. Mirona. Osiras. Tallio. Arias. And of course, Attio. To pick our favorite, we weighed up four key factors: - Spelling: if someone heard the name, would they know how to spell it? - Pronunciation: would it work across different accents? - Competitiveness: could we rank in search and secure a trademark? - Feel: did it fit who we were becoming? No prizes for guessing which one we settled on. Ultimately, a great name is just the beginning. It’s what you build around it that fills a name with personality and meaning. Apple was once just a fruit. Google was a misspelling. Attio was just a made-up word—until we made it ours. Read the full story behind how we chose the name Attio on our blog. Link in comments 👇
