Our animated education video highlights strengths and differences that autistic people may experience in three areas of development: 1. Social understanding and communication 2. Flexibility, information processing and understanding 3. Sensory processing and integration The aim of the video is to empower and support the whole education workforce to recognise and understand these differences. Understanding leads to better support for autistic children and young people in education. Central to this, is recognising that the autistic spectrum is not a single line from low to high; it’s a complex combination of many overlapping characteristics. There may be some shared characteristics, but every autistic person is unique, with their own strengths, differences and needs. Watch our new video, and let us know: ❓ What you liked best about it? ❓ Who else needs to see it? Autistic people often benefit from communication that is clear, unambiguous, and more direct than perhaps the everyday language most people use. Why? Because social understanding and communication is one of the three key areas of difference. We provide a wealth of training resources, including simple checklists, to help teachers adapt their practices to meet the needs of their autistic pupils. These adaptations leverage each individual’s strengths and facilitates better access to learning. As a result, both learners and teachers benefit from reasonable adjustments that accommodate these needs. One of our tools, 'Making Communication Clear,' offers a checklist of good practices for clear communication. This tool also allows teachers to note adjustments made or identify those that would be beneficial in the future. 'Making Communication Clear' is a best-seller in our online Shop—and for good reason! It draws from the experiences of autistic young people, ensuring that what you learn from us is experience-based, tried and tested, and directly applicable in the classroom. While 'Making Communication Clear' is geared towards education, its practical elements can be applied in any context when communicating with an autistic person. Our easy read 10-point checklist can help guide you to make those all-important environmental adjustments. Share our festive tips with your colleagues and let's create inclusive environments that all autistic learners can enjoy. #AET #Autism #AutismEducation #GoodAutismPractice #DifferenceNotDeficit
