To transition the economy, we must invest in new infrastructure and innovation. Aviation isn’t yet sustainable, but it must be. The UK Chancellor's announcement that flights will take off from a third #Heathrow runway 'within the decade' should be the trigger to double down and ensure the UK is at the forefront of sustainable aviation. 📰 New Publication! We are delighted to share a new paper on high-pressure turbine aerodynamics, published by the AIA's Deepanshu Singh, PhD ✈️ Modern aircraft engines face intense challenges, especially in shroudless High-Pressure turbines, where rotor tips endure extreme thermal and mechanical loads. Tip erosion can significantly reduce the engine efficiency and ultimately, the engine lifetime. 💡 This experimental study offers novel insights into HP turbine tip aerodynamics using time-resolved casing measurements acquired at the University of Oxford Turbine Research Facility - a high speed rotating transient test facility. The research explored the impact of combustor exit temperature distortions with a variety of tip designs and tip gaps. Fantastic day of understanding and exchange with the aviation experts at Cambridge University, many thanks to Rob Miller and Rebecca Lees for hosting us and giving us a tour of the Whittle Laboratory. I felt like I was going to take off during live turbine testing in the lab! 📰 This week, the AIA and MIT AeroAstro's Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment were delighted to host an aviation #SystemsEfficiency workshop featuring players across the aviation ecosystem. Bringing together leaders across academia, industry and policy world, participants discussed possibilities and practicalities for improving system efficiency, including: ✅ Air traffic control efficiency measures ✅ Slowing down aircraft ✅ Flying closer to aircraft optimal range ✅ Accelerated fleet renewal 📖 As the second of our four 2030 goals for #SustainableAviation, increasing systems efficiency is a key opportunity for the industry to streamline operations, reducing fuel burn and costs. Read the full report: 💡 If policies are enacted to drive systems efficiency measures by 2030, emissions reductions of 31% to 50% could be achieved by 2050. Our report recommends that leading governments and industry should work in tandem to develop a new wave of policies by 2030 to unlock systemic efficiency gains.
