🎉 Today marks a decade since we unveiled the iconic plinth at the heart of the Baltic Triangle in tribute to Claire McKeown and Paul Rice, the founding members of Baltic Creative. This space has become a beacon for artistic expression, hosting 11 installations curated by Castle Fine Arts Foundry. Here’s a look back at the incredible art pieces so far: ‘Days of Judgement’ by Laura Ford (2014) Our first installation reimagined Adam and Eve as a group of tall, skinny cats. These bronze figures launched the plinth with support from PHD1 Foundation, setting the tone for creativity and innovation. ‘Black Swan’ by Kenny Hunter (2015) This striking piece explored themes of animal consciousness and human perception, crafted by the renowned Edinburgh-based sculptor. ‘Lying, Reading & Sitting Figures’ by Carol Peace (2015) In 2015 we welcomed these figures by Carol Peace. The sculptures were originally made in clay then cast in bronze resin. The artist described this process as magical – ‘turning something so transient … into something so strong.’ ‘Lady Hare Holding Dog’ by Sophie Ryder (2016) Blending mysticism and emotion, Sophie Ryder’s human-animal hybrid sculpture brought a unique depth to the space. ‘The Greatest’ by Andrew Edwards (2017) Depicting Muhammad Ali mid-fight, this bronze statue honoured the legendary boxer during his famous boxing match with Sonny Liston. ‘The Waiting’ by Anna Gillespie (2017) A reflection on urban life, this figurative sculpture invited viewers to bring their own interpretations to its deeply human themes. ‘Dipodiddy’ by Brian Fell (2018) Originally intended for Formby Beach, this handcrafted steel desert rat found a home on the plinth, showcasing Brian's incredible craftsmanship. Brian works mainly in steel, beating the metal by hand. ‘A Warrior Implementing Peace’ by Andrew Edwards (2019) Standing tall on Jamaica Street, the figure represents will and purpose. It depicts a Mercian thane that is also part Saxon, Angle, Celt and Norse. ‘Bowland Hare’ by Marjan Wouda (2020) Inspired by Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland, this sculpture marked a bold departure in material for the artist, working with sheet metal instead of her usual bronze. ‘Bob Marley’ by Andrew Edwards (2021-2023) 2021 saw the installation of this 7ft tall statue of cultural icon, Bob Marley, as part of Positive Vibration Festival. After a turbulent and difficult time, the festival wanted to pay tribute to and inspire others with Marley’s message of love, hope and unity. The statue remained in place until early 2023. ‘The Reckoning’ by Rudy Loewe (2023) Our current installation commissioned for Liverpool Biennial vividly portrays a moment of Black Power revolution in Trinidad and Tobago, inviting conversations about Liverpool’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and colonial histories. A huge thank you to the Castle Fine Arts Foundry, the incredible artists, and our amazing partners for making these artworks possible. 👏
