We are thrilled to announce that Barbican Theatre has received funding from the Youth Music Trust’s Catalyser Fund. This vital support will help us create more inclusive music-making opportunities, breaking down barriers for children and young people to make, learn, and earn in music. At Barbican Theatre, we believe that everyone deserves access to music, regardless of their circumstances. Thanks to this grant, we’ll be able to expand and enhance our music programs, empowering young people to explore their creativity and build new skills. Here’s how we’ll be using this funding: - Expanding ReBel Music Sessions: We’ll continue to develop our popular in-house ReBel Music and Music Production sessions, offering even more opportunities for young people to engage. - Launching Satellite ReBel Music Classes: These new sessions will bring music education out of our building and into new communities, so our exceptional ReBels model can be accessed by young people across the South West - Creating an Instrument Library: Young people will be able to borrow instruments, allowing them to practise or try something new without financial pressure. - Industry Expert Sessions: Visits from producers and industry professionals will provide advanced training and one-to-one mentorship. - Developing a Recording Studio: This will enable participants to gain hands-on experience in a professional music environment. - Increasing Free Participation Bursaries: Financial barriers will be reduced, ensuring more young people can join our programs. - Offering Performance Opportunities: Participants will showcase their talents, building confidence and experience. - Technical Music Training: Workshops in producing and sound engineering will help participants develop practical, in-demand skills. - CPD Training for Facilitators: Teachers, youth workers, and facilitators will benefit from co-creative practice training, ensuring inclusive approaches across all sessions. This grant represents a significant step forward in our mission to make music accessible to everyone. We’re excited to see how these new opportunities will inspire and empower young people in Plymouth and beyond. Stay tuned for updates as we bring these projects to life! Sitting in the Grey, an impactful play coming to Barbican Theatre on Thursday, 14th November. Written by acclaimed playwright Alix Harris and inspired by young voices in Plymouth, this story dives deep into the challenges of adolescence, identity, and finding one's voice in a world that doesn’t always listen. Follow Ashlee, a passionate young woman, as she navigates school, future prospects, friendship and home life. Tired of being told to stay silent, she meets an unlikely ally at a protest who helps her see the power in speaking up. This moving, thought-provoking production shines a light on the "grey space" where young people are often overlooked and emphasizes the importance of taking action rather than standing by. Date: Thursday, 14th November Doors: 19:00 Show: 19:30 Barbican Theatre, Plymouth Reserve your seats today and witness a story that reflects the voices and experiences of a new generation. https://lnkd.in/e8EMjxqz

Join us on Saturday, 16th November at the Barbican Theatre Studio for Section 28 and Its Afterlives: Queer Collage Workshop. Running from 11 am to 1 pm, this free, hands-on session invites participants to creatively engage with the lasting impact of Section 28—a law that marginalized the LGBTQ+ community for 15 years. Led by Chloe Asker, attendees will use collage to respond to historical material from the period, reflecting on the legacy of this pivotal chapter in LGBTQ+ history in an empowering way. A powerful way to connect, reflect, and create! https://lnkd.in/e-RcKJtn

How Adaptability is Shaping Our Future In a rapidly changing world, Barbican Theatre, adaptability has become the key to thriving in any field. At Barbican Theatre, we’re embracing this change by transforming the way we work—prioritising flexibility over fixed roles and focusing on dynamic responsibilities that empower our team to respond to new challenges and opportunities. This shift is about more than just improving efficiency; it's about ensuring we remain an inclusive, innovative space that is responsive to the needs of our community, audiences, and artists. We’ve taken inspiration from pioneering movements such as Corporate Rebels (we can’t help getting drawn to other rebels!), a global group of forward-thinking business leaders who reject the status quo in favour of more flexible, people-centred ways of working. Their approach—focused on dismantling rigid hierarchies and fostering a culture of trust, responsibility, and continuous learning—deeply resonates with us. Much like Corporate Rebels, Barbican Theatre has always identified with a rebellious spirit, challenging traditional methods to find what works best for us and our creative community. We’ve also worked closely with Claire, our Business Development Consultant to shape a model that aligns with our mission. This process has involved workshops on business planning, audience development, and redefining our mission and values. Through these shared sessions, we’ve explored what truly matters to Barbican Theatre and our community, leading to a more holistic, adaptive approach to how we run our theatre.
