About us
Barca-Leeds is a community based charity, a registered company limited by guarantee. We are an organisation that delivers transformational projects for adults, children, young people and families in Leeds, connecting them with services that respond to the needs of each individual. We work with a range of partner organisations, both voluntary and statutory, to reduce social isolation and support people in developing their own initiatives. We help people overcome the barriers they face in fulfilling their potential by delivering advice, support and guidance at a community and individual level. This includes people who may have complex needs and have been excluded from other services as a result. We support people struggling with housing issues, finances, physical and mental health problems. Our services are also geared towards children, young people and adults affected by domestic abuse, drug and alcohol issues, as well as people struggling with employment or education. At a strategic level we seek to influence local, national and international policy development. Our Vision is 'A Fair Society'. This means that our ultimate purpose is to make a long term sustainable difference by empowering people to achieve independent and fulfilling lives. We take the learning and experiences of the people we work with and share their stories with commissioners and policymakers, in order to influence and shape future changes in policy and services. Our mission is to care, listen and respond to the needs of people in our communities, and work with them to deliver outstanding services to improve their wellbeing.

We were pleased to be part of the night safe operation on Valentine’s Day. We had our most busy evening yet with lots of young people coming over to say hello and chatting to us about that they have been getting up to since we last saw them in town. Great to see so many services are available to keep the public safe in Leeds city centre! #leeds #chooseyouthwork #youthwork #Barca Leeds
Valentine’s weekend saw the first Night Safe operation of the year 💌 Councillor Harland and Leeds City Council Chief Executive, Ed Whiting, joined Street Marshals, Angels of Freedom and the Women’s Night Safe Space who were out in the city centre, along with other partners, offering friendly support, advice and assistance to the public. Night Safe Leeds is a Safer Leeds project that brings together support to make sure everyone feels safe and is safe when they’re out enjoying the city. It was great to have Alison Lowe OBE West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor visit our Little London group last week. The young people - self named the LYCM’s (Leeds Young Change Makers) took the opportunity to show off their new podcasting skills by interviewing Alison who kindly agreed to take part. They did fantasticly well and asked some insightful questions. The group were the talk of the school next day and were so proud of themselves. Rightly so!! We love using podcasting equipment. It’s a powerful tool which builds important communication and debating skills as well as confidence within young people. #chooseyouthwork #youthwork #leeds BARCA-Leeds
Cash seized from criminals is continuing to make a difference across West Yorkshire. It was a pleasure to visit BARCA-Leeds to find out how the charity is using its grant from the Mayor's Safer Communities Fund. The money has helped the charity continue to build active relationships with young people, run activities and group sessions, and offer personal and emotional support alongside fun engagement. I stepped behind the microphone for their podcast project and faced a few tough questions! The fund's next round opens in June, so if your group has an idea that can contribute to making our region safer, make sure you apply. Details are here https://lnkd.in/dmhK7fVJ

Thank you Leeds Community Foundation for sharing the impact of the Suicide Prevention Grants. The grant we received enabled us to support 48 LGBTQIA+ young people and young adults in our community to access therapeutic support through counselling, workshops and mentoring. Suicide Prevention Grants have supported more than 4,000 people in Leeds. The programme, delivered in partnership with Leeds City Council’s Public Health Team, has awarded 38 grants and £620,000 since it began in 2018. Organisations funded in 2023 have been sharing the impact of their grants. So far, 689 people have participated in a range of social activities and targeted outreach work to reduce isolation. 67% of those supported said they had increased self-esteem and confidence. 55% of people say their mental health or wellbeing is better. BARCA-Leeds are using their grant to provide mental health support to LGBTQIA+ young people and young adults. Their activities include mentoring, counselling, workshops and social activities. 48 people have taken part so far, and the grant has also enabled the organisation to offer an additional volunteer role. A further round of Suicide Prevention Grants was awarded in 2024, with 8 Leeds organisations receiving funding. This ground-breaking programme has been guided by a series of Leeds Suicide Audits (alongside wider data) and related Action Plans. It funded preventative work with men at first, then included other groups of people who were at higher risk of suicide in Leeds.
