About us
In crisis settings, how can international, national and local actors work together to strengthen commitments and effectively, efficiently and sustainably provide social assistance to those in need? BASIC (Better Assistance in Crises) Research is a FCDO funded programme examining why, how and when to use social protection approaches in different crisis contexts, to deliver more effective social assistance so that vulnerable people cope better with crises and meet their basic needs. Ultimately, BASIC Research aims to generate evidence and fresh perspectives on how to strengthen social assistance in the most difficult protracted crisis settings and for the populations that are the hardest to reach. BASIC Research is led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex together with the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, and the Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT) at the University of Wolverhampton, working with an assortment of partners across 11 countries affected by protracted crisis. Deeper research focuses on Lebanon, Niger, Nigeria and Yemen.

🔍 New Research: Social Protection in Post-Assad Syria #Syria is undergoing an unprecedented transition following the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, and the rise of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). In this rapidly shifting landscape, how is social protection evolving? As part of the Institute of Development Studies-led BASIC Research Programme, Proximity International conducted a rapid assessment of the current changes in social protection across the country. Through 10 Syrian researchers covering nine governorates, the findings reveal a further deterioration of social protection services, with increasingly blurred lines between government support, local charities, and humanitarian relief efforts. 📄 Read the full report by Alexandrine Dupras, PhD and Rachel Slater on Proximity International's website: https://lnkd.in/egCtN4de 🔗 Direct link to report PDF: https://lnkd.in/eWidUrMa #Syria #SocialProtection #Research #HumanitarianAid #HTS #BASICResearch #ProximityInternational

📑 New BASIC Research opinion by Louisa Seferis, Harem Karem, and Paul Harvey 🔎 The state of social assistance in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: A system in flux Since 2015, social assistance in the KRI has been largely inactive, leaving vulnerable communities to rely on local organisations and international actors. But while these local groups provide vital lifelines, they often operate without coordination or integration into formal systems. A recent BASIC study sheds light on the crucial role of local actors in bridging this gap. The research highlights: ✅ The power of local networks in reaching those in need ✅ The importance of trust and transparency in aid delivery ✅ The need for greater participation of frontline providers in decision-making ✅ The urgency of coordinating local and international efforts If the KRI is to build a more inclusive and accountable social protection system, it must integrate these local efforts into formal frameworks. 📢 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eWjRD8wh #SocialProtection #Localisation #HumanitarianAid #KRI #SocialAssistance

As the BASIC Research programme enters its final year, it's a good time to reflect on the critical nature of this research. How can we ensure that social protection systems meet the needs of the most vulnerable in a rapidly changing global landscape? 🌍 Reimagining Social Protection in an Uncertain World 🎙️ In this episode of the Institute of Development Studies' podcast #BetweenTheLines, Rachel Sabates-Wheeler delves into these critical questions with esteemed guests: ✅ Charis Reid (International Labour Organization) ✅ Jeremy Seekings (University of Cape Town) ✅ Maria Klara Kuss (UNICEF) Key topics of discussion: 💡The politics of social protection—supporting governments and civil society to create locally appropriate systems. 💡 Inclusion and innovation—empowering vulnerable and excluded groups, with a focus on gender equality. 💡 Crisis contexts—strengthening humanitarian–development transitions in conflict-affected areas like Lebanon, Iraq, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Social protection is more important than ever, as nearly 50% of the global population still lacks coverage. We must act now to scale up inclusive, responsive, and sustainable systems. 🎧 Don’t miss this insightful conversation that offers practical lessons for researchers, policymakers, and advocates alike. 👉 Listen now: https://lnkd.in/grAmWAWM #SocialProtection #Development

📣 New Research Paper 📜 In the #Kurdistan Region of #Iraq (KRI), government-led social assistance programmes have been largely inactive since 2015. This gap has been filled by local organisations and international actors, but often without coordination, leaving vulnerable communities underserved. Our latest paper by Louisa Seferis, Harem K., Paul Harvey, and Brigitte Rohwerder, ‘A Bridge to Those in Need: Frontline Provider Perspectives on the Accountability of Social Assistance in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’, highlights how local organisations can play a pivotal role in bridging this gap by: 👉 Acting as vital connectors between sporadic aid efforts and scalable, formal programmes. 👉 Providing information, facilitating referrals, and building trust with communities. 👉 Ensuring accountability of both the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and international organisations. Key findings and recommendations include: ✔️ Greater local involvement to enable effective, dignified, and coordinated social assistance. ✔️ Systematic use of personal and community-based networks to identify and support those in need. ✔️ Integrating local organisations into decision-making processes to create inclusive, scalable, and coherent social protection frameworks. By amplifying frontline perspectives, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how local actors can enhance social assistance in contexts with limited government systems. The insights are not only relevant to the KRI but also to other regions where local actors are stepping up to fill the void. 📖 Explore the full findings and recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/eCvMch2K #SocialProtection
