Bay photonics in collaboration with the Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster and its academic partner South Devon College and University Centre South Devon successfully delivered a 2-day short course Intro to Photonics. This was part of a UK government initiative in partnership with Torbay Council and their UK SPF (Shared Prosperity Fund) initiative to provide levelling up opportunities and prosperity to local communities. Bay Photonics loaned Dr Philip Mitchell Technology Solutions Specialist to deliver the course over the two days with support from Martyn Davies SDC photonics industrial expert. Appreciated support from G&H (Gooch & Housego) who provide 12 individuals to participate in the course and an additional two individuals from Bay Photonics. It was also an important precursor for those considering participating in the Level-5, 20 credits, 15 week, Photonic Systems short course delivering in January 2025. https://lnkd.in/eV55TtTQ #BayPhotonics

Bay Photonics are experts in Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) packaging for proof of concept, prototyping and production, using our extensive knowledge of semiconductor and laser/led assembly for design, development, design for manufacture (DFM), production method and test (DFT). We offer both design consultancy and bespoke assembly/packaging services to achieve the customer’s goal. The Team can assist with New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering as product line volume grows and offer services to help transfer to manufacturing facilities within the UK or to offshore Contract Electronic Manufacturers and company subsidiaries. The founders and Senior Engineers all have in depth experience with fibre optic assembly and die attach and packaging from their careers with STC, Nortel, Bookham, Gooch & Housego and Eltek Semiconductors amongst others Our brand new facilities include a ISO class 7 cleanroom and our equipment list continues to expand to meet both new and future customer demands and currently includes: Manual, semi-auto and auto die placement, die attach with flip chip capability. Manual and Auto Gold and Aluminium wire bonding , Various Optical alignment capabilities Currently commissioning an hermetic capping/seam sealing capability. Located in the South West of the UK, they have their main office at the brand new, prestiguous EPIC building which also houses other members of the Torbay Photonics Cluster ecosystem.

At CSA Catapult, we're working on several quantum projects with a range of partners from across the supply chain. ⭐ The AirQKD project addressed quantum-secure last-mile connectivity and built a demonstrator for a metropolitan-scale free-space optical QKD network. ⭐ The SNORQL project aimed to develop industry-ready, robust and reliable packaged quantum components to accelerate quantum R&D. ⭐ The SPLICE project assembled a world-leading scientific and industrial consortium to develop and industrialise gas imagers based on time-correlated single photon counting. We received a warm welcome from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, on Thursday and met longstanding collaborator and friend, Peter Moselund, who's leading Swiss PIC. We also had a tour of the Swiss Light Source which holds the record for taking the highest resolution images on the planet, identifying features down to 4nm in semiconductor chips. Thanks to the Innovate UK GBIP team for facilitating this trip to Germany & Switzerland. #BayPhotonics

Great trip up to Manchester for SPIE's Photonex event, very well organized and super venue. Thanks to all who attended my presentation on packaging SPADs for low temperature operation.
