As part of its specialised work, BBC Monitoring looks at a vast range of media and social media sources to shed light on geopolitical developments and breaking news situations. In this first video of a series, our Latin America Editor Pascal Fletcher looks at a pro-government Cuban YouTube broadcast, El Guerrero Cubano (The Cuban Warrior) that many believe is the direct mouthpiece of Cuba’s interior ministry. A shock offensive on Aleppo turned Syria’s forgotten conflict into hot war. The group spearheading it, Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), has been at pains to present itself as a credible governing body, having renounced its jihadist past. With a bounty on his head, its leader, Abu Mohammed al Jawlani, has been spinning his propaganda machine in the northern province of Idlib, wearing western suits and taking selfies with the locals. We track his journey of transformation in this episode, first published in 2023. Listen here 👉 https://trib.al/XoN6RR2

BBC Monitoring’s Jihadist Media correspondent Mina Al-Lami talks about the surprise offensive by rebel groups in Syria. The most prominent group within this rebel coalition is Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist militant group, which has been conducting a very sophisticated messaging campaign alongside its military manoeuvres - a chief objective of which appears to be to distance itself from any jihadist associations. BBC Monitoring | Disinformation Newsletter Several of US President-elect Donald Trump's picks for his Cabinet and advisory positions are no strangers to disinformation, but will this be a disqualifying factor in their confirmation? Robert F Kennedy Jr has a long record of promoting conspiracy theories, while Tulsi Gabbard is known as "Russia's girlfriend" in the Russian media. Then there's Elon Musk, asked by Trump to lead an efficiency initiative, whose ownership of X has been one of disinformation and trolling. Will Moscow and Beijing be sighing with relief at these appointments, as alleged by former Trump ally turned vehement critic John Bolton? Read here >>https://trib.al/rVKWxwd
