As of December 2022, almost 9000 medical vacancies were waiting to be filled. On top of that, the NHS lost over 10,000 staff members between 2021-22 because of a lack of work-life balance. Hospitals are turning to locum staff to fill gaps, but when £3 billion of the NHS budget gets spent on locums per year, it’s not a cost-effective solution. Here are the concerns we hear from NHS Trusts every day: • Struggling to attract good doctors in the local area • Not enough trainees coming through from deaneries • Let down by direct NHS job applications • Employing Locum doctors as the only solution • Paying above rate caps for medical staff Government investment in training more doctors will provide long term relief but the only viable solution to increasing the medical talent pool in the short run remains international recruitment.
