Celebrating 1 year at Belfast Distillery Company - McConnell's Irish Whisky 🎉 This time last year, I joined the Belfast Distillery Co. team in preparation for the opening of Belfast's newest tourist attraction - McConnell's Distillery & Visitor Experience, located on A-wing of the historic Crumlin Road Gaol. My love for Irish Whiskey and the McConnell's Irish Whisky Brand led me to take a huge leap of faith into what was then an unknown industry to me. Not only were we opening a new distillery and visitor experience, we also opened a café, bar, cocktail experience and retail space, not to mention recruiting and training a whole new team to help us do it! A monumental project, something I'll always be proud to say I was part of. Has it been challenging? Yes! Have there been learnings? Of course. Has it been worth it? ABSOLUTELY! And the best part about it is, we're just getting started! Our Director Joe Babiec spoke last week at the Belfast Summit about his experience setting up and growing a business in Belfast, remarking on how receptive and welcoming the city has been. In this interesting radio interview with Good Morning Ulster, he shares his views on what opportunities the new presidency could bring for business in Belfast, and why Northern Ireland is an exciting location for potential investors.
At last week's #BelfastSummit one of our panel discussions focussed on Financing Belfast's Growth. A shortage of committed local banks means that the finance which supports growth and is accessible in other cities is lacking here. The panel heard from Belfast City Council's Cathy Reynolds who outlined the city's £630m housing-led regeneration programme with Graham construction. Joining Cathy was Joe Babiec - MD Belfast Distillery Company - McConnell's Irish Whisky - you can hear him on the clip I've attached on BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster - he talks about how welcoming Belfast was as a city to do business. The $40m Distillery investment now employs 35 people and exports whiskey to over 40 countries, with plans to attract 100,000 visitors per year. Clare McGee, CEO of social enterprise Awaken Hub talked about the particular difficulties faced by women accessing finance and her organisation's work in supporting female entrepreneurs across Ireland. Awaken Hub wants to hear directly from women across the island keen to take their first step in business or want to join a huge network of support so please get in touch with Clare directly! Peter Dixon is the former Chief Executive of Phoenix Gas - the company who built Belfast and Northern Ireland's modern gas infrastructure, used by tens of thousands of consumers. Peter talked in depth about the city's young workforce, proximity to the Republic and GB and the huge untapped potential of the region.
