The Better Business Act will transform the way we do business.

About us

The world needs business at its best - helping to fix urgent problems like climate change and inequality. The Better Business Act would transform the way Britain does business so that every single company takes ownership of its social and environmental impact. At a time when we face many urgent challenges, we want to change the law so that it is no longer an option for business to pursue profit at the expense of workers, communities and the environment. By amending Section 172 of the Companies Act, we will update the job description for company directors, making it their responsibility to protect people and the planet at the same time as pursuing profit. We know that a majority of directors want this too. The amendment would provide a firm legal basis for directors to advance the interests of society and the environment alongside those of shareholders. This would in turn provide a clear framework for business to engage with the many existing initiatives that seek to drive up standards. A small change in the law will make a big change in the world. It will allow businesses to make decisions in all of our long term interests, helping to create a fairer, greener future for all.

  • The Better Business Act is pushing for a simple but powerful change to UK law – ensuring that all directors align social and environmental interests with shareholder returns in their decision making. From 300 to nearly 3,000 members in just three years – the growth of the Better Business Act coalition is proof that businesses want to see a legal shift to embed stakeholder governance in UK company law, ensuring businesses are truly part of the solution to the UK’s biggest challenges. But we need more voices. More businesses. More action. With key policymaker engagements ahead, now is the moment for businesses to step up and get behind a change that will level the playing field for all businesses. The bigger the coalition, the louder our voice in government – and the greater the impact we will make. Companies like Iceland Foods, Virgin, Lucky Saint | B Corp™, and Ben & Jerry's are already on board – will you join them? 📢 Sign up today and be part of the movement driving real, systemic change. • Yesterday, a room full of #BCorps, purpose-driven businesses and policymakers came together in Edinburgh for B Corp and Beyond: Scotland’s Purpose-Led Business Fest. Attendees came together with a shared mission: to challenge the status quo, redefine success in business, and push for an economy that works for all. Key takeaways from the event… 💡 Business and government must work together -  meaningful partnerships between business, government, and society are crucial for long-term impact. 🌍 Purpose-led businesses are leading the way – speeches across the day highlighted companies such as Ooni and Brewgooder who are pioneering regenerative business models that create real community impact. 🔄 The role of business in a just transition is crucial, ensuring no company or worker is left behind. 📢 Legislative change is needed – the structures around business need to change to drive thus change at scale. With nearly 100 B Corps and a growing movement of ‘future-fit’ companies proving that business can be a force for good, Scotland is a hub for purpose-led business. We have an incredible foundation to build on but if we truly want to change the future of business, we need all UK businesses to act as a force for good. That’s why the Better Business Act is calling for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act – ensuring that company directors align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. • We’re thrilled to see Better Business Act coalition member, SOJO, launching yet another impactful partnership centred around reducing waste and promoting clothing longevity in the fashion industry. Their newest collaboration with ARKET brings garment repair and alteration services both in-store and online, empowering customers to extend the life of their clothing rather than replacing it. By reducing textile waste and encouraging a shift in consumer mindset, this partnership is a powerful example of how businesses can drive positive change. The Better Business Act is calling for all UK businesses to balance people, planet, and profit by changing the law to ensure company directors consider social and environmental impact alongside shareholder returns. SOJO’s work is a perfect example of what business can do when they prioritise impact. Join our coalition of nearly 3,000 businesses advocating for this change. Let's build a future where business truly works for everyone.👇 https://lnkd.in/dtiQYz8 #BetterBusinessAct #SustainableFashion #BusinessForGood #CircularEconomy #SOJO #ARKET

  • Last week, the Business and Trade Committee outlined its priorities and we're very pleased to see corporate governance reform listed as one of these! Reforming directors' duties is a critical step in levelling the playing field for businesses and enabling them to focus on creating long-term value for people and the planet.   We look forward to working with the Committee over the coming months to provide ideas for reform. We’re pleased to share an important milestone — the launch of a new long-term strategy for B Lab UK. From the launch of B Lab in 2006, we have worked to harness the power of business as a force for good. B Lab UK’s strategy is rooted in the Global Theory of Change, aiming to redefine the role of business within our economic system so that every business is a force for good. Our new strategy builds on the success of the B Corp movement over the past 10 years, with one overarching goal that meets the imperative of these challenging times: 🎯 Within 10 years, we want all UK businesses to act as a force for good by default, operating for the benefit of all their stakeholders. To achieve this goal, we will model a better economic system in action and drive change towards the system at scale, working alongside other system actors to build a collective case for: ➡️ The need to ensure all UK businesses are inclusive environments
with workers paid fairly and evolved in decision-making (good work) ➡️ The need for all UK businesses to be run for the benefit of all (stakeholder governance). ➡️ The need for UK businesses to address the climate emergency and degradation of the natural world to create a just and sustainable economy and stable social and natural environment
(climate & nature). It has been a collaborative effort to get to this point and will continue to be a collaborative effort to achieve our goal. Thank you to all individuals and organisations who have helped us to get here. 🙌 Hear from Chris Turner, B Lab UK’s executive director and read our full strategy. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/escWkzBa

  • Brilliant read in Vogue Business highlighting the ‘major obstacle’ shareholder primacy is to sustainability in the fashion industry. The surge in shareholder payouts in recent decades has fuelled cost-cutting strategies such as outsourcing labor, increasing synthetic materials, and mass-producing cheaper products, which exacerbate issues such as low wages, waste, and pollution. To tackle this, more businesses are taking voluntary measures, including legal transformations like #BCorp certification. This requires companies to update their Articles of Association, legally binding them to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, not just shareholders. However, as the article highlights, ‘a reform of shareholder primacy will require more than voluntary efforts’. This is why the Better Business Act is calling for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. • It’s fantastic to see Tony's Chocolonely’s latest annual FAIR report, highlighting how they’re rapidly growing both their impact and their business simultaneously. 🚀 Their bean volume orders through Tony’s Open Chain have surged by 71%, reaching 30,000 tonnes with six new Mission Allies onboard including Waitrose & Partners, Feastables, and Albert Heijn. Through Tony’s Open Chain, every bean is traced, and they invest in farmers’ climate resilience — a brilliant example of how businesses can collaborate to create meaningful solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Tony’s, as an innovator, is showing us the power of partnerships with major players to drive large-scale change. 🌍 Our campaign co-chair, Douglas Lamont, who is also the CEO of Tony's Chocolonely, leads nearly 3,000 other businesses in the Better Business Act coalition – calling on the UK government to amend Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. For more insights, dive into the full details of their latest annual FAIR report below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/ei3GVAq9
