Only ONE of these turmeric samples is authentic. Our samples look different, but that isn’t necessarily a sign of #adulteration. The colour of authentic turmeric can vary for many reasons, such as natural curcumin content, exposure to light, and growing or processing methods. Of course, adulteration can include the use of dyes such as lead chromate to purposefully change the appearance, but colour is not an indicator of #foodfraud, authenticity, or adulteration. Turmeric, which is used in food, beverages, food supplements and cosmetics is at risk of adulteration with: ⚠️ Synthetic dyes ⚠️ Buckwheat ⚠️ Cornflour ⚠️ Rice flour ⚠️ Tapioca ⚠️ Sawdust ⚠️ Chalk powder ⚠️ Talc powder ⚠️ Spent turmeric 🚫 Spent turmeric is not the same as turmeric 🚫 It's a by-product left after valuable components, such as curcumin and essential oils, have been extracted. While spent turmeric still has legitimate uses, presenting it as turmeric constitutes #fraud. Still think you can tell which one is adulterated? Let us know in the comments 👇 #foodsafety

Only ONE of these samples contains 100% black pepper. Yes, they look different, but do they look different enough for you to tell by sight which one has been subject to adulteration? Unfortunately, the colour of authentic black pepper can vary, so it isn’t an accurate sign of adulteration. Colour can vary due to: ▶️ Drying techniques ▶️ Harvesting time ▶️ Processing methods ▶️ Soil type and climate ▶️ Age ▶️ Grind size ▶️ Pepper variety ▶️ Storage discolouration Adulteration is inherently opportunistic; however, there are common, known adulterants for black pepper – some of which are listed allergens: ⚠️ Buckwheat ⚠️ Cornflour ⚠️ Rice flour ⚠️ Tapioca ⚠️ Papaya ⚠️ Spent pepper ⚠️ Chilli ⚠️ Poppy seed 🚫 Chalk 🚫 Sawdust Still think you know which sample has been adulterated? 🍵 It's time to talk about #tea! There has been #adulteration in the tea industry ever since it became popular outside China around 300 years ago. But, given tea’s 4,700-year history, it’s likely that adulteration for financial gain wasn't anything new. Fast forward to the age of #AI and advanced #DataAnalytics, and our partners Queen's University Belfast are presenting research at this year's prestigious #RAFA2024 next week. The research applies a multi-omics approach to pinpoint where black tea was grown, presenting just one aspect of a wider programme focused on geographical modelling of tea. If you're not attending #RAFA, this documentary will fill in the gaps 👉 https://lnkd.in/etRMDXkw Chris Elliott Bernadine Tay European Speciality Tea Association (European Tea Society) Simon Haughey #FoodAdulteration #FoodSafety #FoodFraud #FoodIntegrity

With a staggering 104 arrest warrants, the results of this year's Operation OPSON are a powerful reminder that food crime is a crime. The multi-region operation highlighted the critical issue of #foodfraud, seizing over 22,000 tonnes of adulterated food and 850,000 litres of beverages across Europe. With counterfeit goods ranging from olive oil to wine and even expired products being reintroduced into the supply chain, this operation clearly demonstrates the scale of #foodcrime and the importance of industry coming together to fight it. Well done to all the agencies and companies involved in the fight for supply chain transparency and safety. #FoodAuthenticity #SupplyChainSafety #OperationOPSON Europol
