Ahead of a significant debate in the commons tomorrow (Friday 17th), new research has revealed huge support among the public for the mandatory installation of solar panels on all new buildings. The New Homes (Solar Generation) Bill, known as 'The Sunshine' Bill, would mandate for solar to be installed on all new buildings as standard and that it should cover 40% of the building’s ground floor area. As of October 2024, the UK now boasts over 17.2GW of installed solar capacity, reflecting a 6.3% increase from last year. 🚀 In October alone, 76MW was added from 20,102 new installations, with 73% of these being residential. While domestic systems comprise 30% of the total capacity, approximately 5.2GW still comes from home rooftops. Ground-mounted installations dominate, contributing around 55% of total solar capacity. 2023 saw nearly 200K new installations — the second-highest ever recorded! As we head into 2025, there's hope for even more significant growth, especially with a Labour government pledging support for solar projects. However, some industry experts are calling for more ambitious targets to drive costs down even further. Evendons Primary School, which is part of the Bellevue Place Education Trust, had a new extension built that features a 71 mm Kingspan Topdek Composite Panel and is finished with a light grey Rubberfuse TPO membrane. The project also included the installation of a 9.5 kWp solar PV system, enhancing the building's environmental credentials.
