Discover one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in India.🌳💧 The Pichavaram mangrove is a vital Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) located in the Vellar-Coleroon estuarine complex, home to a range of unique species.🐦 It acts as a shield during natural disasters, holds and stabilises shorelines, retards erosion, and helps in adaptation to climate change.🌏 Yet, it faces numerous threats from human settlements; energy production and mining; fishing and harvesting aquatic resources; and urban wastewater.🐟 Saving these vital refuges is a never-ending battle. We cannot do this alone. Double your impact today. Thanks to a generous donor, every donation will be matched up to £10,000. 🙌 Support KBAs here 👉 https://lnkd.in/efrptHvv #BirdLifeInternational #HabitatsforHope #Habitats #KBAs #Biodiversity #IBAs #Conservation #BirdLifeWinterAppeal Key Biodiversity Areas

🔴 Lead is poison. Ban it NOW! Sign our petition 👉 https://lnkd.in/drGXkqY6 Despite being banned in petrol, paint, and pipes, over 44,000 tonnes of lead are still released into the EU environment each year from hunting, shooting, and fishing. This must stop! Lead exposure harms human health, especially children, poisons animals, and contaminates our ecosystems. Every year: - 1 million kids in Europe are at risk from lead in game meat. - 1 million #birds die from lead poisoning. - 38,000 tonnes of lead shot pellets poison nature: ingesting just one can kill a bird. - Lead fragments in bullets and lost fishing tackle poisons soil and water, impacting ecosystems. - Pets and livestock risk lead exposure too. Support is growing for non-toxic ammunition and fishing weights, and the EU has a unique opportunity to drive this change. Safe alternatives exist for people, wildlife, and the environment. 📢 Sign the petition to #BanLeadNow and protect our communities and nature!

CEO @ BirdLife International | Supporting 123 partner organisations in 119 countries and territories around the world
Here’s the BirdLife International reaction to the #COP29 climate deal. It’s clearly inadequate but we keep going. Huge thanks to colleagues from across the BirdLife International family for banging the drum for nature (including from Bahamas National Trust , SEO/BirdLife , NCF NIGERIA , RSPB , Nature Rwanda , Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) , Nature Iraq NAJU NRW and Guinée Écologie) And finally, special mention to Cathy Yitong Li and Noelle Kumpel, PhD from our global team for leading the charge in Baku. You’re tireless enthusiasm is remarkable and needed! 💪 🦅

Protecting Black-necked Cranes in Bhutan’s stunning Phobjikha Valley 🏔️ Did you know Bhutan is the world’s first carbon-negative country? 🇧🇹 This small nation is leading the charge against climate change, but its communities and wildlife, like the majestic Black-necked Cranes, are still under threat. 🌡️ Climate change is disrupting delicate ecosystems. 🌾 Unsustainable agriculture and tourism are putting extra pressure on these iconic birds. Thankfully, organisations like BirdLife Partner RSPN Bhutan are working hard to strike a balance between community livelihoods and conservation. ⚖️ At the same time, BirdLife International is advocating to keep nature front and centre in global climate action at #COP29. 🌍💚 🔗 Read more about this vital work here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gjhUcHa4

Investing in nature is investing in our future. As the final days of #COP29 negotiations approach, governments must recognize nature’s critical role in climate action. Today, a global group of more than 70 NGOs, business coalitions, Indigenous Peoples organizations, and influential individuals has issued an urgent ‘COP29 Nature Statement’ calling for strong recognition of nature in the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance text under discussion in #Baku right now. There is no climate solution without nature. 💬 Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/eHHhj-bK 📝 You can also join the collective statement by adding your signature here: https://lnkd.in/eHW5xCnC #WithNature #ProtectWhatWeLove

Are we ready to lose another? 🥺 The African Penguin was recently uplisted to Critically Endangered on the official IUCN Red List, pushing this iconic species closer to extinction. 💔 Human activities like overfishing and climate pollution have driven their numbers to just 1% of their original population. But hope is not lost. BirdLife South Africa is working tirelessly with Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) to reverse this decline by creating new penguin colonies, developing innovative monitoring systems and tackling resource competition. Together, we can turn the tide. 🌊 Sign the petition to protect the African Penguin here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eU6_Jegw Read the full story in our latest article here: https://lnkd.in/eQAAQgCm

Why are grasslands so important?🌾 Steenkampsberg Grasslands is a large Key Biodiversity Area that has limited protection, found in Mpumalanga, South Africa.🌍 The landscape is dominated by rolling high elevation (2000m) plateau grasslands, mountain slopes and shallow valleys. 🏔 It supports a plethora of bird species, including the Southern Bald Ibis which breeds in at least two colonies, and roosts and forages throughout the area.🐦 But agriculture, aquaculture, and wood plantations threaten this vital habitat.🪵 Saving these critical refuges is a never-ending battle, but a difference can be made.🌿 Double your impact and support KBAs here 👉 https://lnkd.in/efrptHvv #BirdLifeInternational #HabitatsforHope #Habitats #KBAs #Biodiversity #IBAs #Conservation #BirdLifeWinterAppeal Key Biodiversity Areas
