  • In Memory of Lyudmila Trut: Pioneer of the Silver Fox Experiment The scientific community lost a visionary on 9th October 2024. Lyudmila Trut, a trailblazing scientist, dedicated her life to one of the longest-running and most insightful experiments in animal domestication—the Silver Fox Experiment. Beginning in 1959 with Russian geneticist Dmitri Belyaev, Trut worked tirelessly to transform wild silver foxes into friendly, domesticated companions by selecting only the friendliest foxes to breed. 🧬✨ Thanks to her relentless dedication, the foxes began to change after just a few generations. They exhibited affectionate behaviors toward humans, like wagging their tails and seeking out companionship, much like dogs do. Over time, physical transformations followed: floppy ears, curled tails, and other endearing traits emerged, showcasing the profound effects of selective breeding. 🐾💖 Lyudmila Trut’s work has gone far beyond fox domestication. It has offered us invaluable insights into the science of domestication and the deep, evolutionary connections that bind humans and animals. Her legacy reminds us of the profound impact that passion and perseverance can have on science and the world. 🌍🦊 Thank you, Lyudmila Trut, for your incredible contributions to our understanding of the natural world. Your work will continue to inspire for generations to come.

  • 🦊🐾 What Breed is that Fox? The Unique Story Red Fox Breeds The concept of "breeds" in wild animals may seem unusual—yet, the North American red fox has a fascinating history of selective breeding that has led to distinct lineages or "breeds", each with unique traits and purposes. 🌍 ❓👉 What do you think? Should we refer to these as "breeds," or is there a better term for the different variations of captive-bred North American red foxes?

  • 🦊🌲 How Red Fox Dens Boost Tree Reproduction in the Boreal Forest 🌲🦊 In the nutrient-poor soils of the northern boreal forest, tree reproduction is often limited. But red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) play a surprising role in helping certain trees thrive! 🌱 Recent research reveals how foxes, through their denning activities, enrich soil nutrients around their dens, boosting the reproductive success of white spruce trees (Picea glauca). 🦊 White spruce trees near fox dens show impressive growth, producing up to 18x more viable seeds than those further away 🌰. By enhancing soil fertility, foxes act as "ecosystem engineers," creating hotspots that support tree reproduction and may even encourage tree migration northward. 🌲 Read more in our blog post: https://lnkd.in/ekjeyrfj
