Remembering Kiyan Josiah Prince who was fatally stabbed outside the London Academy in Edgware in 2006. He was killed while trying to stop the bullying of another boy. The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 was enacted that increased the age at which a person can purchase a knife from 16 to 18. Today would've been his 34th birthday. This #BlackJoyFriday let's remember Lord Herman Ouseley for his tireless efforts in promoting racial equality, social justice, and equal opportunities in the UK. He was instrumental in founding the “Kick Racism Out of Football” initiative, which addressed the pervasive issue of racism in sports. From 1997 to 2019 Ouseley chaired the London-based Chandran Foundation, which provides education and employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people. He was also a longstanding council member on the Institute of Race Relations. His legacy will be remembered. #RacialEquality #SocialJustice #KickRacismOutOfFootball #LordHermanOuseley

🕊️🌈 Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the trans lives lost to violence & discrimination. Let’s celebrate their bravery and resilience while committing to a future filled with love, acceptance, and equality. According to Forbes, 320 trans people were killed in 2023 alone, with 94% being trans-women or trans-feminine, and 80% of those killed were trans people affected by racism. Trans rights are human rights ✊🏾 #TransDayOfRemembrance #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQRights #TransAwareness #TransVisibility

In October we held our demo day event for the F100 programme in partnership with Sky. The F100 Growth Fund is linked to our economic empowerment pillar. We empower, mentor, and fund Black businesses through this programme. Our Black Britain's Mandate has key recommendations to ensure an inclusive economy where all Black people can thrive, ranging from mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting, to a national strategy to improve outcomes for Black businesses. We're excited to see a new Mental Health Bill in Parliament. It recognises racial disparities in detentions and community treatment orders, and says it will tackle racial discrimination in care, however whilst it states that community treatment orders (CTO’s) can now only be used if there a risk of serious harm to the safety of the patient and others, which is a step forward, it doesn’t go into detail as to what this looks like in reality. Our Black Britain's Mandate highlights that there is a need for dedicated funding for Black mental health services, which the new Bill does not seem to address. Additionally, we would like to see the Bill recognise the root causes of mental illnesses in Black communities, as prevention is better than treatment. Our Mandate also calls for diversity and training in the workforce - mental health care workers and doctors should be trained in how mental illnesses can show up differently in different races and ethnicities, in order to prevent misdiagnoses, and allow for appropriate care and cultural sensitivity. It's a welcome step in the right direction, but more radical reform is needed. #MentalHealthAwareness #BlackMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #RacialDisparities #MentalHealthReform #DiversityInHealthcare #MentalHealthAdvocacy

This #BlackJoyFriday we're celebrating that recently two of our trustees were recognised in Glamour's '9 Black women who are fighting to make the UK a more equal place': https://lnkd.in/esXkGwbC Marcia Willis Stewart KC (Hon) has fought for justice in the legal system for her entire career. She has represented survivors of the Grenfell Tower Fire and the family of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman, when it was revealed two police officers took and shared photos of the sisters upon discovering their murder. Dame Vivian Hunt is one of our founding members. Dame Vivian served as managing partner for McKinsey & Company’s UK and Ireland offices and led the firm’s Life Sciences practice in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She also serves as the Chair of Teach First and on the British Museum and Southbank Centre boards. We're proud to have a great Board of Trustees at BEO, and it's amazing to see them recognised for the incredible work they do. #Glamour #BlackWomenInLeadership #EqualityInAction #LeadershipRecognition #WomenInBusiness

Today is World Diabetes Day. Research from Diabetes UK shows that people from Black African, African Caribbean and South Asian backgrounds are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes from the age of 25. This is much younger than the white population, as their risk increases from 40. We still don’t know exactly why this is but taking steps towards leading a healthier lifestyle could help lower your risk. Here are some tips: - Go for walks and keep active if you're able to - Eat healthy meals with wholefoods and vegetables - Reduce stress levels by taking time to relax and do things you enjoy - Reduce consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesAwareness #Type2Diabetes #DiabetesPrevention #DiabetesUK

The Government has launched a review of curriculum and assessment in England. This is an opportunity to get our voice heard. This is a historic opportunity to influence the future of the education system and what it is for. One of our mandate recommendations is asking for a more diverse curriculum - you can help this happen: https://lnkd.in/ew-W_gpk #EducationReform #DiverseCurriculum #CurriculumReview #EducationMatters #FutureOfEducation
