Happy World Day of Social Justice ✊🏾 2024 was a game-changing year for BEO’s legal team. For the first time, we took legal action against public bodies and government decisions that reflected systemic racism. From our Windrush judicial review, to defending a Black student who was excluded from school despite clear evidence of criminal exploitation, our legal work is a key area we're focused on continuing and growing. However, we need your help. Litigation isn’t just costly—it can be a huge burden for individuals and organisations taking on powerful institutions. This fund will ensure we can continue challenging injustice without being held back by financial barriers. You can support us by donating to our new Legal Justice Fund: https://lnkd.in/eKsnAXce #SocialJustice #LegalAction #SystemicRacism #JusticeForAll #Windrush #SupportJustice #LegalJusticeFund

Yesterday our CEO Timi Okuwa was live on ITV News talking about our successful lawsuit against the Ministry of Justice and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime regarding their knife crime tagging programme. This marks our second successful legal case after our Windrush case last year, and we continue to fight for justice for Black communities. However, we need your help to continue to fight. Donate to our legal justice fund to be a part of dismantling systemic racism: https://lnkd.in/eKsnAXce Thanks to Liberty, Matrix Chambers and Switchback for their support. #blackbritain #beochangeishere #mopac #itvnews #beo #knifecrime #knifecrimeuk #knifecrimeawareness #tagging #blackcommunity

Last week our CEO Timi Okuwa attended Fawcett Society conference: For a Feminist Future to speak on the panel discussing demanding dignity and safety in public services. Timi spoke on the panel about our Public Harms research work done in partnership with Fawcett Society last year, highlighting the racial biases Black women and girls experience across education, policing and mental health services. Thank you to the Fawcett team for hosting an incredible event full of optimism and hope for the future. You can read our Public Harms research on our website: https://lnkd.in/ed3H--Qe

📢 We have reached a settlement in our judicial review claim against the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) on the global positioning system (GPS) knife crime tagging programme. You can see our CEO Timi Okuwa talk about the case on ITV News tonight at 6pm in London, and at 7pm and 10pm nationally. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eTt5vB-K MOPAC data shows that Black people were nearly twice as likely (87% more likely) to be selected for the electronic monitoring scheme than white people. This settlement seeks to eliminate that bias and discrimination and was brought with the support of Matrix Chambers and Liberty. The settlement includes a rapid review of the programme to address concerns of racial disproportionality to ensure fair and unbiased decision-making in the selection of those for tagging. You can find out more about the case on our website: https://lnkd.in/epZMybms #JudicialReview #PoliceAccountability #MOPAC #CriminalJustice #SocialJustice #RacialEquality #GPSMonitoring

The Black and Asian LGBTQIA+ community is more likely to experience a hate crime, and 51% have experienced discrimination or poor treatment from others in their local LGBTIA+ community because of their ethnicity. This needs to change. Particularly at a time where we are witnessing the rights and existence of trans and non-binary people being questioned, we want you to know that we see you and we stand with you. This LGBTQIA+ history month, we encourage you to connect and support incredible organisations like UK Black Pride and Stonewall who continue to fight for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. #LGBTQIA #LGBTQRights #BlackAndAsianLGBTQ #SupportLGBTQ #LGBTQHistoryMonth #BlackPride #EndDiscrimination #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Timi pictured with Runnymede Trust CEO Shabna Begum and talented musician Mica Paris. The event was filled with people coming together to celebrate diversity and hope for the future. In December we launched our 'State of Black Education in Britain: A Power Analysis for Equity and Change' funded by Mission 44. It presents an in-depth power analysis of the structural dynamics that influence the experiences of Black pupils, educators and communities in the UK education system. The report calls on Ofsted to enhance accountability by revising inspection criteria to include anti-racist practices and implementing cultural competency training for inspectors, ensuring that schools are evaluated on both academic and inclusivity standards. At a governmental level, it recommends legislative support for inclusive curricula that cover diverse histories. Read the full report on our website: https://lnkd.in/ezguAvPF
