Meet The Team 👋🏻 We're back at the Air Traffic Control Tower for January's meet the team. Becky is an Air Traffic Control Officer and has worked at the airport since 2017 when she started as an Air Traffic Skills Assistant (ATSA). The airport has sponsored Becky through all her ATCO courses before she was validated in November 2018. Since then she has worked an an Investigator, On the Job Training Instructor and an Assessor. What is your dream holiday/work destination? Probably Dubai or Australia, I’ve visited and loved both! What has been your proudest work moment? Passing my validation, I’ve always doubted myself and this was a huge achievement. If you weren’t working at Blackpool Airport what would you be doing? Spending time with friends and family and travelling the world - there’s so many places I’d love to explore!

Ensuring safe takeoffs and landings during icy conditions is crucial, especially during last week's conditions here at the airport ❄️ The UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) emphasises that runway excursions are a top aviation safety concern, often caused by ineffective braking on contaminated surfaces like ice. A standardised method introduced by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the Global Reporting Format (GRF) allows airport operators to assess and report runway surface conditions accurately, enabling pilots to determine aircraft performance precisely. The GRF uses a Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM) to assign a Runway Condition Code (RWYCC) ranging from 6 (dry) to 0 (less than poor). This code, along with a description of the surface contaminant, is communicated to pilots, aiding in safe landing and takeoff decisions. Regular runway inspections and accurate reporting are vital to mitigate risks associated with ice and other contaminants, ensuring aviation safety during winter operations 🌨⛄️ A huge thank you to the fire crews for their hard work involving the Winter Operations Plan! 📸: Al Rutter

We love to see drone footage and pictures that have been taken along our fabulous coastline! While Blackpool Airport is protected by a Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ), which means it is illegal to fly a drone or remotely piloted aircraft at any time within the FRZ, you can apply for special permission. Blackpool Airport manages all drone flight requests via Air Portal – app.airportal.aero/ and before submitting an application you will need to register with Air Portal. Please make sure that applications are submitted at least 72 hours in advance. Regulations on the flying of drones or remotely piloted aircraft in the UK are constantly evolving and before flying a drone, it is your responsibility to be aware of the current rules. For the most up-to-date information please check the UK CAA website here: www.caa.co.uk/drones/
