A few days ago Nestlé issued their 2024 Creating Shared Value Report which reflects the continued commitment of our company to sustainability and a more circular, regenerative and inclusive value chain. This report also showcased Nestlé Nespresso SA initiative on crop insurance for coffee farmers, initiative I'm really proud of, as it illustrates the tangible benefits of long-term collaboration of our Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board, a real coalition for impacts! The climate change has been affecting coffee harvests increasingly, with extreme rainfall and droughts posing the most significant threats to farming communities. Insuring often small, dispersed, and hard to access farms in countries like Colombia or Indonesia, is proving to be a major challenge.  Our answer to this challenge, as part of our AAA program, was to partner with Fairtrade International and in some countries with Blue Marble Microinsurance to provide an affordable insurance solution that provides farmers with timely support when they most need it. And for us, it ensures a sustainable supply of coffee long term.    Following the success of the solution in Colombia, Blue Marble and Nespresso continue to grow the initiative's geographical footprint, expanding to more regions in Colombia, as well as further afield to rural communities in Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Zimbabwe and Kenya. The insurance protection now covers nearly 26K farmers and their families, even beyond the Nespresso value chain. Agriculture is key to Ecuador’s economy and food security, providing income for 17.9% of the country’s economically active population and producing nearly 60% of the food in Ecuadorian families’ basic food basket. However, Ecuador’s agricultural sector faces mounting challenges due to natural hazards, including floods, storms, and El Niño-induced extreme weather events, which threaten rural communities and their economic stability. To protect smallholder maize and rice farmers from climate-related hazards, the InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF) has partnered with an international consortium led by Guy Carpenter Mexico, AXA Climate, Blue Marble, and Campo Seguro, acting on behalf of Ecuador’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, to develop the country’s first parametric insurance solution for smallholder farmers.
