What an incredible, thought-provoking week at Harvard! The Innovation and Strategy program at Harvard University's Professional & Executive Development - Harvard Division of Continuing Education was a outstanding learning experience. I gained invaluable insights from not only the brilliant instructor Areen Shahbari, MBA, but also from my fellow participants who bought a wealth of experience from diverse industries. Although I completed my MBA 15 years ago, stepping back into the classroom after over a decade of industry experience has given me a fresh perspective and new ways of thinking. I'm excited to return to work and apply the tools and best practices I've gathered throughout the week! 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗦𝗚, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘄 I am deeply honoured to have participated as an expert commentator at the ESG Class Actions Workshop, hosted by the University of Amsterdam. The session focused on an outstanding paper titled "Trade Unions and ESG Obligations: A Private International Law Perspective on the CS3D" by Prof. Aukje van Hoek (University of Amsterdam) and Prof. Etienne Pataut (Sorbonne Law School). This thought-provoking paper examined the critical role of trade unions in ESG obligations, unpacking the complex intersections of private international law, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D), and their far-reaching implications. It provided a deep dive into intent, impact, and the layered legal frameworks shaping these essential topics. Drawing on my experiences from the G20 Brasil 2024/B20 Brasil Task Force and my work as a lawyer and litigator, I was honoured to bring a practitioner’s perspective to this vital academic discussion. It was an absolute privilege to share the platform with my esteemed colleague and dear friend, Mariëlle Groen, as we offered insights into the international and legal dimensions of this dynamic subject. While I may not consider myself an “expert” next to such exceptional academics, I am profoundly grateful for the invitation and the chance to contribute. My sincere thanks to Prof. aukje vanhoek, Prof. Etienne Pataut, Ianika Tzankova, and Dr. Aart Jonkers for their warm welcome, the enriching dialogue, and the honour of being part of this exchange. This experience reaffirms the incredible impact that collaboration between academia and practice can have in addressing today’s pressing global challenges.
