The Story of Fisherrow Nestled in the heart of Musselburgh, The Fisherrow Centre is more than just a community space; it is a cherished hub where heritage and modernity intertwine. Our mission was to craft a new branding system for the Centre that would honour its rich history while resonating with today’s vibrant community. Fisherrow’s heritage is deeply rooted in its identity as a historic fishing village. Once bustling with activity, the harbour—dating back to the 17th century—was famed for its herring, whitefish, and prawns. Today, while its role has shifted toward leisure and education, the stories of the Fisherrow fishwives remain an indelible part of the region’s cultural fabric. The Fisherrow fishwives, known for their bold independence and entrepreneurial spirit, carried the catch from sea to city. Their iconic striped skirts and aprons became symbols of their resilience and hard work, marking them as a unique thread in East Lothian’s tapestry. The challenge was clear: create a visual identity for The Fisherrow Centre that would celebrate this rich history while engaging with a modern, diverse audience. The Centre, as a lively meeting point for creativity and collaboration, needed branding that would feel both rooted and forward-thinking. Our Approach We turned to the iconic imagery of the Fisherrow fishwives for inspiration. Their distinctive garments—marked by folds, creases, and stripes—provided a rich visual language. By abstracting these elements, we designed a series of patterns that nod to the past while offering a fresh and contemporary aesthetic. Heritage imagery was paired with a bold and bright colour palette, balancing tradition and modern energy. The colours evoke the dynamic and inclusive nature of the Centre, creating a sense of approachability and warmth. Typography and logo design followed suit, incorporating clean, modern lines with subtle references to nautical and community themes. The result was a branding system that feels authentic to Fisherrow’s history while inviting the community to embrace its future. #designforgood #heritage #scotland #designstudio #branding
