With Melissa Rivers opening the program alongside Honorary Chair Alexandra Grant, Bonhams' Caroline Robinson led the live auction, featuring works by Andy Warhol, Alexandra Grant, Cassandria Blackmore, Herb Ritts, Todd Gray, Shepard Fairey, John Baldessari, and more. Last night, we were thrilled to hold a panel discussion focusing on the life and work of eminent Iraqi artist Jewad Selim to celebrate the publication of the artist’s catalogue raisonné. The panel featured Bonhams Group Head of Middle Eastern, Islamic & South Asian Art, Nima Sagharchi, in discussion with Selim’s daughters, Zaineb Jewad Selim and Miriam Knight. The panel was moderated by Professor of Art History and Coordinator of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative at the University of North Texas, Nada Shabout. An exhibition of Selim’s work titled ‘Jewad Selim: A New Life’ is on display at Bonhams New Bond Street until 28 February. We spoke to Specialist Thomas Seaman about a star lot from our next 19th Century & British Impressionist Art auction - Osman Hamdi Bey’s ‘Kahve Ocağı (The Hearth)’ from 1879.     This oil on canvas painting is thought to be one of Hamdi Bey’s first harem scenes in which many of his trademark motifs can be seen for the first time. Perhaps the most interesting decorative element is the wooden calligraphic panel hanging to the left of the fireplace – it reveals a private joke, as the calligraphy spells out the artist’s name in an intricate Kufic script. This is the first known example of the “secret signatures” Hamdi Bey enjoyed hiding in his many compositions.     Works by Osman Hamdi Bey rarely come to the open market, only around 30 oils have ever been to auction. Breaking Boundaries at THRESHOLD 👁️ Last night, we hosted THRESHOLD, a dynamic exhibition and event curated by HypeArt at our Los Angeles gallery. The evening began with a thought-provoking panel discussion around breaking boundaries in the art world featuring artist Shepard Fairey, HypeArt Founder and Managing Editor Keith Estiler, Juxtapoz Art and Culture Magazine Editor-in-Chief Evan Pricco, Gallerist Richard Scarry, and Bonhams’ own Ralph Taylor, Global Head of 20th and 21st Century Art, and Isabel Norsten, Specialist in Post War & Contemporary Art. Following a lively conversation, the event flowed into a cocktail reception with drinks sponsored by Don Julio, Bulleit, and Tanqueray. On view were works by Shepard Fairey, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Beverly Pepper, Sam Gilliam and others, inviting viewers to engage with art that challenges conventions, blurs lines and forges new paths. A rediscovered watercolour masterpiece ✨️ ‘A Reception in the Harem’ by John Frederick Lewis is one of the star lots of our upcoming 19th Century & British Impressionist Art auction on 26 March in London. Unseen in public for over 60 years, the work is a larger version of the celebrated oil painting by Lewis at the Yale Centre for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut. Watercolour was Lewis’s true passion and the additional details in this work offer rare insights into his practice and ambitions, while their shared subject matter reveals tantalizing information about his life in Egypt, and why he was considered a cultural insider.
