We're pleased to be at the Central London Community Healthcare Conference today, connecting with health visitors, school nurses and other health professionals to share our work and develop new partnerships. And it was wonderful to catch up with the brilliant author Sita Brahmachari, a former BookTrust Writer in Residence, who spoke about how stories can make a difference in this space.

This is such important research from CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) - and the findings show there's lots of work to do. Research shows representative books can support self-identity, which is why our #BookTrustRepresents programme supports and promotes authors and illustrators of colour. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/dV-PERj and discover our competition for schools, inviting children to tell us about a book that represents them: https://lnkd.in/eGAu8Csx And for recommendations of inclusive reads, explore our #GreatBooksGuide: https://lnkd.in/ejhbhqRM
🔊 Our 7th annual #ReflectingRealities report is out now! This year’s report shows a significant drop in the presence of racially minoritised characters in books published for children in 2023 in the UK. For the first time in its history, the annual CLPE #ReflectingRealities survey reports an overall drop in the percentage of racially minoritised characters featured in published children’s books reviewed – from 30% in 2022 to 17% in 2023 The report shows the number of racially minoritised main characters has dropped by half to 7% in 2023, compared to 14% in 2022. This year’s report calls for renewed commitment from the publishing industry in improving the volume and quality of inclusive output, alongside a review of practices and investment. Thank you to Arts Council England for their continued support in funding this important research and our Steering Group for their invaluable support of this work. And a HUGE thank you to both Habiba Nabisub for allowing us to reproduce her brilliant illustrations in this year’s report and to Ben Cotterill for designing the report. Forget #BlackFriday - it's #BookFriday! We're so grateful to our friends at The Folio Society Ltd, who will be donating £1 to us for every book bought from today through Sunday, helping to share the #MagicOfBooks with children who need it most. They're hoping to raise an incredible £10,000, so this is the perfect time to do some Christmas shopping (or treat yourself!) https://lnkd.in/dqk5zTa

Reading can help children: 👉 to bond with their carers 👉 to feel secure 👉 to strengthen their sense of identity 👉 with their mental wellbeing Our new #StoryExplorers programme has been designed to bring these benefits to children in foster care, kinship care, and adopted families. We know that books and reading aren't always easy for families to access. That's why we work with community organisations like food poverty project Feed the Hill in Lewisham to make sure our packs, support and resources are reaching children and their parents and carers. Find out more about how this works at Feed the Hill here - and donate to our #MagicOfBooks appeal so we can share the joy of books with children at Christmas and all year round: https://lnkd.in/ezwRjafR #Christmas #ChristmasAppeal #ChildrensCharity #ReadingTogether #SharedReading #ChildrensBooks

We're working with the brilliant team at RENEW to figure out how we can inspire children with biodiversity and get families reading together. We brought together scientists, creators, and early years practitioners to begin talking about some of these challenges and how we can all work together to make a difference. Here's what happened at our Biodiversity Storytelling Summit... #ChildrensBooks #Environment #Nature #Biodiversity #EarlyYears

Shauni from our Partnerships Team had a wonderful time joining Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce at the Sunderland College Childcare Conference today! Shauni and Frank both spoke to students to inspire them and emphasise the key role they will play in supporting families on their reading journeys as members of the early years workforce.
