It’s World Mental Health Day 🌍
This year’s theme is workplace mental health. For many of us, work is a major part of our lives - it is where we spend much of our time.
Here are some tips from the Mental Health Foundation website on how to support your mental health at work.
1. Talk about your feelings 🫂
Discussing your feelings can help you maintain your mental health. It isn’t a sign of weakness but rather a proactive step in taking care of your well-being. While it can be hard to talk about feelings at work, having colleagues or a supportive manager you can talk to can make a big difference.
2. Eat well 🥗
Our diet can affect how we feel both immediately and in the long term. A balanced diet is essential for good physical and mental health. It can be tough to keep up a healthy pattern of eating at work. Regular meals, plus plenty of water, are ideal. Try to get away from your desk to eat and reduce your intake of caffeine and refined sugar.
3. Be mindful of your activity levels 🏃
Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem, concentration, sleep, and overall well-being. If you work in an office, taking a walk at lunchtime can make a difference.
4. Ask for help 🗣️
It’s normal to feel tired or overwhelmed at times. Your employer may offer an Employee Assistance Programme. These services are confidential and can be accessed for free. You can also seek occupational health support through your line manager or HR service.
5. Take a break 🕐
A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. Taking regular short breaks from your work can help you reduce stress. If your employer offers mental health days, take these and make sure you use them well.
