The Christmas cracker was invented by a London sweet shop owner called Tom Smith. In 1847, after spotting French bonbons wrapped in paper with a twist at each end, he sold similar sweets with a “love motto” inside. He then included a little trinket and a “bang”. His “Bangs of Expectation” included gifts such as jewellery and miniature dolls. By 1900, he was selling 13 million a year. Products in the supply chain are packaged differently than the gifts in Christmas crackers but it's important that a site or operation can demonstrate they are providing products that are quality-assured, legally compliant, and authentic. The first to be recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), the BRCGS Packaging Materials Global Standard is now in its 7th edition and has become the global industry benchmark. It is not only used by food packaging producers but also by producers of packaging for all applications, across the supply chain. Today mulled wine is a warm glass of spiced wine, associated with the festive season. Warm wine originated with the ancient Romans who drank it to ward off the effects of a cold winter, later though the practice mostly evolved as a way of masking the flavour of spoilt or cheap wine. Make sure you’re not like the Romans and stay up to date with the latest Food Safety 9 practices.
