  • Brickmas Countdown Finale! 🎄Norton Folgate We know we've mentioned this Supreme winner recently but it's a real architectural renovation masterpiece and we want to conclude our Brickmas countdown with a bang! The sheer complexity of bringing multiple agencies together to give life to disused buildings is a feat of creativity and a woven tapestry of construction expertise. We're talking building materials, colour palettes and a good eye for transforming buildings into havens that sympathetically sit within an existing bustling area of life. It's safe to say these builds weren't copying trends. Winning both Urban Regeneration and the prestigious Supreme award, the Brick Award judges commented: "This excellent mixed-use scheme is a unique blend of old and new, creating highly sustainable, innovative spaces in a historic environment in the heart of the city." • Brickmas Countdown Day 12 🎄Aspen Wood Hospital Leading the way with specialist hospital design, Aspen Wood is a sustainable building that incorporates Scandinavian collaborative approaches of nursing relating to complex forensic learning disability needs. The design of this hospital doesn't just consider the needs of its occupants, but has considered the needs of the planet, which helped it receive an exceptional excellent BREEAM rating for its sustainable credentials. The Brick Awards entry describes how "exterior aesthetics blend shifting tones of grey, with Blockleys Sterling Grey, Windermere Grey, Pennine Buff, and Black Smooth bricks forming a distinctive superstructure extending from a central hub. Nestled amidst open, green courtyards, the design cultivates a tranquil and welcoming atmosphere for its occupants." • Brickmas Countdown Day 11 🎄Cara Brickwork Today's Brickmas countdown features Monk Bridge and Islington Wharf, 2 residential developments in Leeds and Manchester. Cara Brickwork undertook specialist brickwork to bring the architectural vision to life for these new apartments and firmly embedded these buildings in the future of their respective cities. Monk Bridge: "The development comprises 665 apartments across five blocks, ranging from 13 to 23 storeys in height, together with the transformation of the existing Grade II Listed Victorian railway viaduct." Islington Wharf: "With the façade brickwork supported from the slab edge at each level, the masonry support brackets were not only required to accommodate the PT pockets created for slab tensioning strands, which varied in position, but were subjected to significant additional loading due to the cantilever effect and deep brick returns. This was particularly pronounced in pier areas, where PT pockets meant masonry support could not be used and lower levels had to support double the brickwork load." • Brickmas Countdown Day 10 🎄5 Frederick’s Place A well-deserved winner of the Craftsmanship category, this refurbishment project is a testament to the skill of the bricklayers at Grangewood Brickwork. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the building’s façade, from the careful selection of the clay bricks (Ibstock Plc & York Handmade Brick Co Ltd) to the precise execution of the installation. The Brick Awards entry reveals: "Inspired by the Mercers’ Company origins in textile trading, the textured brickwork on the façade of the archive at No. 5 Frederick’s Place is a ‘woven tapestry’. Selected bricks are projecting and thus emphasise the ‘warp’, while the recessed joints highlight the ‘weft’ in ‘woven’ brickwork draped to the ground. The texture is the most intense at the top and disperses as it drops to the ground to invite visitors into the archive. The tapestry brickwork enhances the building by introducing intricate patterns and textures to its façade. It adds visual interest and depth, making the building more memorable to viewers. The arrangement of bricks creates a dynamic surface that changes character throughout the day. The hand-laid arches below the ‘tapestry’ add further detail to the building’s façade, which when viewed by the public will be more aesthetically pleasing."
