Call for Submissions for BGA Medal 2024... The BGA is calling for submissions for the BGA Medal, which is awarded annually to a paper written by a BGA member (or members) for “meritorious contributions to geotechnical science or practice”. The award is based on the best published paper (in an international journal and from BGA, ISSMGE and ISRM conferences) authored or co-authored by a BGA member (or members) in the previous calendar year. Submissions (comprising the paper and application form) for consideration of the BGA Medal award are invited for papers published in the calendar year. Only one submission from a set of BGA authors/co-authors is allowed. This does not preclude a single author appearing on more than one submission if the other papers have a substantially different authorship. Submissions should be made via the on-line submissions portal on the BGA website. Full details of the award, eligibility criteria and application forms can be found on the BGA website - https://lnkd.in/e7ZwCj4p The deadline for submissions is midnight on 31 January 2025. #BGA #BGAMedal2024 #BGAMedal #CallForSubmissions #Geotechnical #Geotechnics

Gerwyn Price... The BGA is sad to announce that Gerwyn Price, formerly of the BRE Geotechnics Division, and Founder and Director of the I&M firm, CMCS, has died at his home in Wales, aged 87. Gerwyn was a great scientist, engineer and entrepreneur. He joined BRE (BRS at it was then) Geotechnics in 1968/9 from the Mining Research Establishment, aged just over 30, where he started in Bob Cooke’s section to work on pile behaviour and was soon introducing new instrumentation. The first record for him on the BRE Geotechnics literature database is a report on marine pile tests dated 1970. Over the years the database lists some 87 papers and reports for which he was an author. Gerwyn worked at BRE for 23 years, becoming head of a dedicated Monitoring Section and pioneering geotechnical monitoring techniques, including taking the Electrolevel out of the lab and applying it to many different places and situations, realising the potential of its accuracy. In the early 1990s he installed monitoring systems for monitoring movement of the Mansion House in the City of London, which was being affected by tunnelling activity needed for the construction of the Docklands Light Railway. In 1993, Gerwyn left BRE to set up his own I&M company, CMCS. Since its formation Gerwyn led CMCS to carry out a diverse range of projects from large infrastructure monitoring projects like the Jubilee Line Extension Project contracts 102 & 104, the Second Severn Crossing and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link to historic buildings like the Leaning Tower of Piza and Castel del Ovo in Naples. While mainly operating in the UK, CMCS also carried out projects in Spain, Italy, The Czech Republic, Canada, The USA, Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand and also supplied equipment to The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for use in China including on the Tianshenqiao Dam, the largest rock filled dam in the world. Gerwyn was always determined to find a way, no matter how difficult the task seemed. He was always full of enthusiasm and energy. He had a great love for his home country Wales. To the end he still had a lot of projects to do at his home, from making bird hangers for the feeders, moulds for a shield he wanted to replicate, to designing a pulley system to stop the sun from coming in on the conservatory window. He was always designing something and coming up with ideas. He was one of a kind, an inspiration to all, and we will greatly miss him.

SAVE THE DATE | Earthworks 2025 Conference... 🟤 When- 16 & 17 September 2025 🟤 Where - University of Birmingham The BGA's 4th Biennial Conference in 2025 will be on the subject of Earthworks. The annual spend on earthworks in the UK is believed to be in the order of £1bn-1.5bn. However, much of the knowledgebase is in practices developed decades ago and in people that have long-since retired. Following on from the BGA’s hugely successful Geo-resilience conference, Earthworks 2025 will focus primarily on the design and construction of new earthworks. Sponsorship opportunities are available for this event, to enquire about sponsorship packages, please contact - Marianne@in-conference.org.uk To join the mailing list for regular updates, including registration details, visit - https://lnkd.in/erVZ2p6J To find out more, visit the event website - https://lnkd.in/egmymyz4 #Earthworks25 #Conference #Geotechnics #Technology #Earthworks #Monitoring

REMINDER: IESF Lecture – “Unusual Tunnel Collapses – The Role of Geotechnical Engineering” – 27th January 2025... If you missed the BGA’s 75th Anniversary Conference, you can listen again to Professor Lord Robert Mair’s lecture, titled ““Unusual Tunnel Collapses – The Role of Geotechnical Engineering”, which follows the IESF British Section AGM, on 27th January 2025 . The Lecture will be delivered in the Telford Lecture Theatre, The Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, from 17:15 hrs AGM 18:00, lecture at 18:10. Attendance is FREE, but booking is required. To book your place at the lecture, please email events@iesf.co.uk About the Lecture: Tunnel collapses represent some of the most catastrophic failures in civil engineering, often with severe consequences. In this lecture, Professor Lord Mair will explore the critical role geotechnics play in these failures and their prevention. He will examine the primary causes of tunnel collapses, such as ground instability at the tunnel face during construction and tunnel lining failures resulting from ground forces. Using a blend of historical and modern examples, Lord Mair will highlight key lessons learned and their implications for the future of tunnelling and underground construction. #IESF #Lecture #Tunnels #Tunnelling #CivilEngineering #Geotechnics #GroundInstability #Construction #LessonsLearned
