British Property Federation
Public Policy Offices
We represent businesses owning, managing and investing in UK real estate – an industry with a market value of £1,662bn.
About us
The British Property Federation is one of the country’s most influential and high profile lobby groups. Representing the property industry – including commercial and residential property owners, investors, developers and their advisers – the BPF works to influence legislation and raise the industry’s profile across all areas of business, politics and the media. We aim to create the conditions in which the property industry can grow and thrive, for the benefit of our members and of the economy as a whole. We do this by engaging with the government and other bodies whose decisions affect the property industry, on things like finance, tax, localism, planning, sustainability and housing policy, to make sure that the industry’s needs and views are taken into account.

⏪ In case you missed it, last week we spoke with our Director of Policy Ion Fletcher to explore the Industrial Strategy and the key changes the BPF is proposing. Here's what he had to say: ❓In a nutshell, what is the 'Industrial Strategy'? 🗣️It’s the Government’s plan to boost economic growth by focusing support on a small number of “high growth potential” sectors. They want to identify barriers to investment and introduce policy to overcome them. ❓How might it affect the property industry in the UK? 🗣️If it works, then it should boost sectors like life sciences, advanced manufacturing, and digital and technologies, all of which are important occupiers for property owners. In doing so, it should bump up economic growth and productivity, which will generally support the property sector. We’ve also made a strong case for #PropTech to be treated as a high growth sector; it would be great to see targeted Government support for this. Our main concern is that the consultation is very light on the importance of “foundational” sectors that underpin the economy and high growth sectors, like property and logistics. ❓Given the importance of the built environment to achieving many of the strategy's aims, were you surprised that buildings featured so little in the current draft? 🗣️Yes – the consultation didn’t mention property at all and used the word building just once! But life sciences need labs, financial services need offices and everyone needs a strong logistics/transport network to move people and goods around the country. The industrial strategy won’t achieve its potential if it overlooks the critical role of property in providing the space and facilities that businesses need to thrive. As part of this strategy we need policy change that unblocks planning, eases development viability constraints and reforms property tax. ❓What are the BPF's next steps? 🗣️We'll be talking to Government to make sure the points in our response are taken on board and push for them to be reflected in the final industrial strategy and proposed sector plans to be announced in the spring of next year. 🔗 You can read the BPF's response to the Government's Industrial Strategy consultation here: https://lnkd.in/eBPficDs

The committee is currently seeking new members, so if are passionate about the PBSA sector, make sure to get your application in here: https://lnkd.in/edG-Yqwp ❓What’s the Student Accommodation Committee all about? 🗣️The committee’s job is to boost the supply of student housing and raise standards in the sector. We do this by driving best practices and pushing for policy changes through thought leadership, research, consultation responses and engaging with key stakeholders. ❓Who’s on the committee and who are its key stakeholders? 🗣️The Committee is made up of investors, developers, operators, advisors and university bodies, all involved in the purpose-built student accommodation sector. Great to join Scottish Property Federation members last night for a meeting with Scottish Labour Party spokesperson on the Economy, Business and Fair Work Daniel Johnson MSP. Alongside SPF Chair Stuart Oag, our chief executive Melanie Leech joined the productive discussion centred on boosting built environment investment in Scotland. Those in attendance also focussed on finding solutions to key challenges faced by the industry, including in the construction sector and critical infrastructure provision.
A huge thank you to Daniel Johnson MSP (Scottish Labour Party) for joining SPF and British Property Federation members yesterday for a roundtable on increasing investment into Scotland's built environment. As well as discussing progress with current proposals related to the Housing (Scotland) Bill and the need to build more homes of all tenures, the meeting focused on ways to close the widening capacity gap for the construction industry, and the need for strong leadership and public sector support to unlock investment and development across the country. Thank you to everyone from across Scotland and further afield who came along to discuss this key issue!
