BSSS Conference - Leaving a Long Lasting Legacy As part of our conference in Cardiff, three of our members delivered a session using our loan box to the Year 5 Class at Christ the King Primary School. The children learnt what soil is made up of, why it is so important and some of its amazing features through experiments via the loan box including: - Jam Jar Experiment - Super Sponges - Hand Texturing https://lnkd.in/etB2UKMw We had a great time interacting and engaging with the class and we hope some now know what a soil scientist does. Thank you to our members, Lizzie Sagoo, Izzy Lloyd and Jay Ryan for leading the session. Many thanks for the support from Cardiff Council for helping to organise the session. We look forward to seeing everyone at Glamorgan tomorrow for the first of three exciting days of our Annual Conference 2024.

Earlier in November, BSSS President, Jacqueline Hannam, and Executive Director, Andrew Morris, travelled to Baku for the 29th Conference of the Parties. This was the fourth year BSSS has attended the COP climate summit under our official non-governmental organisation (NGO) observer status. BSSS were delighted to contribute to the discussions through our own Side Event on ‘Invest in Soil Health – fostering the future of climate change mitigation and adaptation'. CPL/Puragen Activated Carbons at the BSSS Conference We are delighted to have David Reay from CPL/Puragen at our Annual Conference in Cardiff in December who will be delivering a session on "#PFAS ‘Forever Chemicals’ – Search, Capture & Destroy." This session will take place on Wednesday 4 December from 12:15-12:45pm in the Parallel Room. https://lnkd.in/enZWtQaE Session Synopsis: PFAS (per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances) is a chemical family consisting of at least 15,000 individual compounds. They are sometimes referred to as ‘forever’ chemicals because of their persistence in the environment.  These compounds, which are now known to pose serious health risks for humans and animals, have been widely used in industry since the 1950s, for products including non-stick cookware, firefighting foams, food packaging and fabric coatings. This session will outlie the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the removal of PFAS from air, soil and water, together with the use of advanced and award-winning thermal reactivation for the safe destruction of the PFAS contaminants and the sustainable recycling of the GAC.
