20 gigabit network upgrades is why I absolutely love this time of the year! So here is why we needed a 20 gigabit backbone in the datacentre: Our #proxmox cluster networking was redesigned and new 10 gigabit switches were installed. We also upgraded one of our NAS systems (48TB) where previously it had 4x1gigabit copper ethernet, it now has 2x 10gig sfp+ in LACP bond mode. The actual real life data throughput maxes at 9 gigabit due to disk limitations however having a 20gigabit bond allows for much better reliability in case of sfp+ link failure. Every hypervisor is now connected via 20 gigabit and so concurrent migrations for failover went from doing 2 at once to 20 at once! We have made migrations 10x faster if a node fails. Investments into datacentre presence and systems have been put in place so that we can continue to grow our hosted offering (co-location etc) especially when we are now growing our synaas.uk arm of 9 Technology Group LTD #cisco #networking #lacp #fibre #hypervisor #synology #datacentre #nas

Xmas 🎄is the best time to do mega network upgrades! Take this as an example for a client: — Client has 1 gbit leased line by a different provider (not yet us) but has always struggled with intermittent speeds. They blamed provider and provider blamed Santa clause. - BB9 was brought in to investigate, so we got to the bottom of it pretty quickly. A 1 gbit port on a router DOES NOT mean that internet throughput after NAT will also be 1gig. This totally depends on the routers cpu of how many packets it can handle at once etc. (Always check datasheets) like the draytek 2862 has throughput rated of 400 mbps. Thats fairly low, even with Hardware acceleration turned on they dont get much more. Here comes Broadband9 with #Omada , managed by us on our controller. We installed a TP-Link ER8411 Enterprise grade router with two 10gbit sfp+ ports and multi-wan capabilities. The throughput rate for this is just under 10 gig but most importantly their openVPN throughput rate is over 1gig. So what does this mean though? 😎 Means that if staff WFH have great internet and then vpn into the office (with gw redirection) then their speeds will be as good as their own at home. Means that their site-site connection to the datacentre (where they have remote servers) is now much faster (can be felt when browsing file shares) Means that we can fully monitor issues remotely, be it with wifi 🛜 or with connected devices. Here are 10 FREE ways to really secure your business from Cyber threats! : 1️⃣ Use a password Manager to create, store and delegate any sensitive credentials 🔑 2️⃣ Change your default passwords for devices you plug into the internet such as Router logins, wifi passwords, CCTV credentials etc 🔐 3️⃣ Always enable Guest Wifi on your router for those devices that don’t need access to the rest of your network. 🛜 4️⃣ Make sure your website is secure via an SSL certificate, nowadays you can secure it free by using “LetsEncrypt” 🔐 5️⃣ Ensure all your PCs have “Ransomware protection” enabled (This is a setting in windows in addition to Anti-Virus) 🛡️ 6️⃣ Sign up to free early warning service by NCSC : https://lnkd.in/gFwz7QYU 7️⃣ Ensure that your business email settings for SPF, DMARC, DKIM, ARC are setup correctly. 📧 8️⃣ Utilise a spare Hard Drive, an external Backup device to make copies of your important and crititcal data. ☁️ 9️⃣ Use a service such as OpenDNS to prevent access to harmful websites from your network 🌐 🔟 Use Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) on every device and platform you need to login to - Bonus points if you use your password manager (1️⃣) to manage the codes. —- Notes : Really you should use automated cloud/offsite tools but this list is around utilising free methods. The list can carry on and there are many more ways in securing your business for free. These are the basics along with constantly ensuring all devices are upto date with software which should give you a foundation to become more #Cyber aware. #CyberSecurity
