Although she had a highly respectable teaching career no amount of willpower alone could stop her from drinking alcohol, leading her to a long downward spiral of loneliness and isolation. 💙💚 In this video she explains why a previous stay in a different rehabilitation centre didn’t work, provides her interpretation of the 12 Steps and discusses her experience at Broadway Lodge. #TransformingLives

  • 💙 The Psychology Behind Gambling Addiction 💚 How to Support a Someone with a Gambling Problem Gambling addiction is complex and deeply rooted in both psychological and social factors. It’s important to remember that it is not about a lack of willpower or character flaws—it’s an illness that requires understanding and treatment. Recovery is a personal journey, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Whether you’re dealing with addiction yourself or supporting someone who is, asking for help is a brave and important step. Please head to https://lnkd.in/gu4mDH2h to read our two recent blogs on the subject. #TransformingLives

  • At its core, gambling addiction is tied to the brain’s reward system. When a person gambles, their brain releases dopamine—a feel-good neurotransmitter—similar to how it does with other enjoyable activities. Winning amplifies this release, creating a euphoric and rewarding sensation. Over time, some individuals chase this “high,” even when the losses outweigh the wins. Here’s the thing—gambling isn’t just addictive when you win. It’s the unpredictability that pulls people in. That “will I win or lose?” feeling taps into the brain’s reward system, keeping you hooked. It’s called the “variable reward system,” an unpredictable mix of wins and losses that keeps you coming back for more. • "Deaths from alcohol in England at record high" - BBC news It's not good news to see today but sadly, it's unsurprising. We know there are so many people suffering the harmful effects of alcohol and it's no secret how physically (and mentally) damaging alcohol can be. Addiction doesn't discriminate, it can affect anyone at any time in life. If you are struggling with a drinking habit that is affecting your life and wellbeing, please know that change is possible and help is out there. One option is a stay in a residential treatment centre like Broadway Lodge. We offer medically-managed detox for people who are physically dependent to alcohol, which means they are monitored and cared for 24/7 by a team of nurses and health care assistants. It's considered the safest way to detox. We recommend that this is followed with a stay on our abstinence-based therapeutic programme which is a comprehensive, daily programme of therapeutic sessions and interventions to address the psychological impact of addiction. This is the part where people can learn healthy coping mechanisms for life and make positive change. To find out more about how we can help people to start to recover from alcohol misuse to help prevent further damage, please contact us for an information pack by: 🌿 Emailing hello@broadwaylodge.org.uk 🌿 Calling 01934 815515 (9am - 5pm weekdays) https://lnkd.in/ggxyrcXk #alcohol #alcoholdeaths #alcoholharm #alcoholmisuse #addiction

  • A Special Visit 🌿 This month we welcomed a former client’s mum and sister to Broadway Lodge – Margaret and Hayley. Their relative, Ashley, sadly relapsed and lost his life to the powerful illness of addiction in December 2023, 5 days after leaving treatment at Broadway Lodge where he was sober, safe and happy for 12 weeks. Margaret and Hayley spent most of the day with us, meeting with counsellors and nurses who cared for Ashley. They also bought a beautiful red Japanese maple tree to plant in our garden along with a plaque in Ashley’s memory. Markkus (Head of Treatment, Counselling & Aftercare), and counsellor Louise, joined Margaret and Hayley to plant the tree. We will take good care of this special tree, nurturing it so it continues to grow and flourish at Broadway Lodge and we look forward to watching it change. Margaret and Hayley not only donated a sum of money in Ashley’s memory at the start of the day but also bravely held a session for clients followed by recording a podcast where they shared about the struggle of supporting Ashley through active addiction and how this, along with the grief of losing Ashley, has impacted them. Some of the messages were very poignant for the clients and the podcast was deeply emotional. It was a pleasure to spend time with these wonderful women and we can’t thank them enough for all of their time and generosity 🙏 💙 #memorial #inmemory #addiction
