Saving the small things that run the planet
About us
Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates, and we are actively working to save Britain’s rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. There are more than 40,000 invertebrate species in the UK, and many of these are under threat as never before. Invertebrates are vitally important to a healthy planet – humans and other life forms could not survive without them. The food we eat, the fish we catch, the birds we see, the flowers we smell and the hum of life we hear, simply would not exist without bugs. Invertebrates underpin life on earth and without them the world’s ecosystems would collapse.

A massive thank you to everyone who voted for Save Middlewick Ranges Film in the Smiley Charity Film Awards! We're finalists 🎉 This short film by Ross Birnie introduces Middlewick Ranges and the local community fighting to save it. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eqwCvJjZ Middlewick Ranges in Colchester is a haven for nature and people in an increasingly congested city. Despite being the largest remaining intact acid grassland in Essex, it was earmarked for up to 1,000 houses which would see the site destroyed and its rare species lost forever. However, just last week we received news that the local council were recommending that the Middlewick Ranges is removed from its Local Plan 👉https://lnkd.in/eJKenAZZ We now await judging for the final results. Keep your fingers crossed for more positive news 🤞 Buglife, Butterfly Conservation, Colchester Natural History Society, CPRE Essex, Essex Field Club, Essex Wildlife Trust and the Friends of Middlewick have been working closely to secure the site’s future. . . #MiddlewickRanges #BuglifeCampaigns #SaveTheWick

Colchester City Council has recommended that the nationally important Middlewick Ranges wildlife site is removed from its Local Plan. 🪧 Buglife have been campaigning alongside other charities and local community groups to save this site after plans were announced for up to 1,000 houses to be built on the land. 🪲 Thanks to strong evidence of Middlewick’s ecological importance and an overwhelming response from the local community, the council is recommending that it be spared. 🌳 The Friends of Middlewick have created a Vision for a Middlewick Ranges Nature Reserve – which explains why the site is so important to local residents and what a nature reserve could look like. 💙 This is a fantastic step towards making this Vision a reality on the Middlewick Ranges! ℹ️Find out more and explore the Vision 👇 https://lnkd.in/eJKenAZZ . . 📷 Grassland and oak landscape on the Middlewick Ranges © Gosia Zaborny . . #SaveTheWick #MiddlewickRanges #SavingSites #BuglifeCampaigns Essex Wildlife Trust Butterfly Conservation CPRE The countryside charity RSPB #FriendsOfMiddlewick #ColchesterNaturalHistorySociety #EssexFieldClub
