Housing Standardisation ‘Who designs our homes and how do we live’. What does a typical home in England look like? How does it compare to housing in other countries? How are these homes designed? What is it like to live in them? The Housing Standardisation exhibition, currently open at the Building Centre in London until January 2025, tackles critical questions about housing design and regulation. It shares the exhibition space with the NHNW (New Homes in New Ways) Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) showcase, making this an ideal opportunity for those interested in scalable housing solutions. The exhibition presents 37 detailed case studies of recently built affordable housing projects from England, Chile, China, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. These case studies, part of a three-year research project led by Professor Sam Jacoby and his team from the Royal College of Art's School of Architecture, provide a unique international perspective on housing standardisation. Each housing model has been crafted by the same model maker, allowing for easy comparison within a thoughtfully organised exhibition space. The exhibition examines the role of regulation and standards, with a particular focus on space standards and design quality. These standards, often contextual and subjective, play a significant role in shaping design decisions. Since a large proportion of new housing is constructed at scale by volume housebuilders—frequently preferred by housing associations and local authorities—these standardised dwellings are often more influenced by regulatory frameworks than by architectural creativity. The exhibition delves into the varied interpretations of "well-designed," "housing quality," and "affordable housing" among different housing stakeholders, especially residents, illustrating how these definitions can be deeply contextual and nuanced. Together, these two exhibitions provide a comprehensive understanding of housing standardisation and the delivery of new homes in innovative ways. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge of contemporary housing practices. A key takeaway for me is how our MMC kit-of-parts Flatpack Social Housing displayed in the NHNW exhibition, aligns with these principles of standardised housing that can be built at scale. This concept the ‘FlexiHouse’, which was developed some time ago, is a flexible housing solution that can expand from a one-bedroom unit to a four-bedroom, seven-person dwelling, all on the same footplate. #HousingStandardisation #RCA #theRoyalCollegeofArt #NewHomesNewWays #Buildingcentre #HousingFestival #NHNW #Crisis #MMC #offsite #kitofparts #shelter #HomesEngland #localauthorities #housingassociations #localgovernment #homelessness #architects #innovation #constructionsector #desiners

Join us today for our third lunchtime webinar as part of the New Homes in new Ways Exhibition. Light steel framing is a well-established construction method which is ideally suited to provide housing and multi-storey, multi-occupancy residential buildings for the modern age. The British Constructional Steelwork Association and The Steel Construction Institute have published the National Light-gauge Steelwork Specification (NLSS) to promote greater consistency in project specifications involving light-gauge steel frames. https://lnkd.in/eb3VSws3 #lunchtimevent freeevent #webinar #mmc
