  • Sunish Amin recently completed our Kickstart Your Business programme, let's hear about his experience! #BL_Kickstart "I'm a physiotherapist who is passionate about helping individuals overcome physical challenges resulting from injury or surgery. I began my business journey during the pandemic and am currently working on developing innovative products for walking aids and their users. After seeing Kickstart Your Business advertised online I initially thought the content looked relevant to my situation, and the fact it was free meant I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. The workshops definitely provided a forum for aspiring entrepreneurs to gain the resources and knowledge needed to further their ventures. The diversity of ideas and businesses at various stages that I met on the programme provided a wealth of knowledge that could be shared without judgement or criticism. The intellectual property sessions were particularly useful for my innovative ideas. I was able to apply this knowledge and conduct my own comprehensive patent search with support and guidance from Jeremy O'Hare. After the sessions I connected with the workshop speakers and have been able to go to them for further advice on my business idea. Completing the programme has made me more confident about my ideas and I now feel ready to develop a strategy and use the BIPC’s resources to conduct the relevant research for compiling my business plan. Although things are still a work in progress, I've come to appreciate that nothing has to be perfect in order for you to start. The workshops have definitely played a vital role in supporting me throughout my business journey." Whether you're just setting out, or have already made the leap, we're here to help. • Two weeks ago, our National Network of BIPCs celebrated #BIPCStartupDay in style! With livestreams, in -person events, panels, mentoring, photography and so much more, it was brilliant to see our BIPC community coming together across the country.  From Newcastle to Worthing, entrepreneurs and expert speakers visited their local BIPCs to share their journeys and advice. Meeting in person offered attendees great opportunities to network and make local small business connections. There was a great sense of community as attendees were able to share regional resources and trade tips on businesses at all stages. Roy Wood, Business & IP Centre Advisor from Business & IP Centre Nottinghamshire, said ‘Start-up Day 2024 was the vital platform needed for honest and reflective conversations on the highs and lows of business ownership by our panel of independent businesses – a conversation that enveloped the audience and continued throughout Nottingham Central Library for the rest of the day! Attendees left inspired and enthused, but also ready to roll their sleeves up and face some of the challenges ahead, equipped with a network of new friends in the same boat, or with some guidance from those that have succeeded ahead of them.’   Don’t forget that you can use your local BIPC for expert guidance and friendly advice, wherever you’re located. • Meet JJ, founder of Charity WIILMA and one of our BIPC Waltham Forest business ambassadors. #HighStreetHero "Our local BIPC has helped us and we hope will continue to help us as our journey continues. Sarah, our allocated business consultant, met with me regularly during our start-up phase to identify key priorities and provide guidance on how to navigate various challenges in our first year. Our current consultant Stephen has also provided support with registering and protecting our trade marks and also encouraged us to apply for our first National Lottery Grant, which we used to run a support project for Ukrainian refugees across London. The best piece of business advice I've been given is to focus on your USP and what makes you different. In my spare time I am most likely to be found writing and rehearsing songs, and creating art as I find it very therapeutic. A book that has impacted me is 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C. S. Lewis, and I think on a subconscious level it must have influenced WIILMA too. As a nomadic charity we make an effort to create portals to different worlds by using our creative skills to transform mundane community spaces into inspiring ones." We've put together a selection of fantastic products sustainably made in the UK by small businesses who have used our BIPC services. Keep an eye out for exclusive discount codes too!  Here’s a glimpse of just a few of the gifts you can find in our guide... 🎄 Love Christmas crackers but hate all the waste? Keep This Cracker has the answer. Bea Thackeray began her business a decade ago after visiting the BIPC at The British Library and now makes sustainable alternatives that pull like standard crackers but can be reused by simply replacing the snap. You can fill the crackers yourself with treats your loved ones will actually enjoy and reuse them year after year. 🎨 Choose gifts that make a difference. What an honour to interview Charlie Bigham of Charlie Bigham's | B Corp fame at The British Library Business & IP Centre Start Up Day yesterday, as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. Charlie was brilliantly engaging. Some highlights for me included: ✱ His relentless passion for product quality and how that’s been at the core of his brand’s success and why people see his ‘prepared meals’ as good value instead of a standard price comparison. ✱ The ability of great entrepreneurs to see threats as an opportunity, and the solution-orientated mindset it takes to build a brand with genuine longevity over 28 years. ✱ Business growth comes from finding brilliant people and employing or working with them before you feel you might be ready. As I always say, if you want to grow you have to let go, even though that process can be painful as a business owner! 😉 Huge thanks to the Business & IP Centre for inviting me to co-host. Not enough people know what an incredible resource the BIPC is for  budding entrepreneurs both here in London and across its UK library network. If you’re an entrepreneur it’s worth checking out their free events and services! Well done to the team for putting on such a wide-ranging and hugely inspiring event. Isabel Oswell Alison Dwyer Jacqueline Brown Noelle Duval Connie Ward-Allen Jordan L. #BIPCStartUpDay

So, this week I’m doing a really exciting event with the British Library’s Business & IP Centre, as part of Start-up Day 2024, and they’ve organised a jam-packed schedule of engaging talks and discussions designed to support small business owners and entrepreneurs or those with a brilliant idea, thinking about starting so if that’s you - listen up! As part of their ‘Inspiring Entrepreneurs’ event, I’m going to be doing a fireside chat with TV presenter, lawyer and business coach, Denise Nurse, where I’ll be discussing everything that I’ve learnt in my career and my top tips of running a successful business - nothing is off the table! And, what makes this event so great is that you can attend it in person and ask me your own burning questions, but then it will be live streamed for absolutely FREE so you can also watch from the comfort of your own home. I’m a huge fan of everything that the British Library and the Business & IP Centre is doing to support the talent of up and coming entrepreneurs, especially when the UK has so much potential,  but it’s their phenomenal stats on helping women-led and previously unemployed entrepreneurs that I feel so incredibly proud and passionate about. For instance - over 60% of their users are women and over 72% of the new 18,000+ businesses that they helped to create were owned by women. And, over three years, 25% of the new businesses established were owned by people who had previously been unemployed. I’m thrilled to be supporting this amazing event so I hope you can take some time out of your evening to join me in what I know will be a really worthwhile and fulfilling event, I know I’m incredibly excited about it! If you’d like to come in person, you can purchase tickets on the link below and the link for livestreaming is available there too. Hope to see some of you there! #BritishLibrary #firesidechat #business #businessadvice #entrepreneurs
