We are delighted to confirm Salford Lads and Girls Club as the latest addition to our Centres for Warmth programme. Look a little familiar?🤔 This centre gained international recognition after The Smiths posed in front of the building in what became an iconic photograph taken in 1986, featuring on one of its album sleeves. But it's what happens inside this building that makes it so great. The club has been a central part of Salford’s community since 1903, providing a safe and welcoming space for young people in the area. Facing closure due to spiralling costs, a fund-raising campaign was launched this year, backed by Morrissey and Salford Council, among many. And now you can add Cadent to the list of those supporters, as we pledged £30,000 – an amount that means the club surpassed its need for £250,000 by the end of this month. Phil Burrows, Head of Customer Vulnerability at Cadent, said: "I am delighted and proud to confirm Salford Lads and Girls Club as the latest addition to our Centres for Warmth project. "This is not just an iconic centre, it is a vital part of the community, providing a safe and welcoming place for young people in particular, and many more too. "It has been wonderful to learn all about the incredible work that goes on within the club. "I am over the moon that we can provide the final amount of funding the club needs to reach its target to stay open. "As someone born and raised in Manchester, and being a big fan of The Smiths, I am more than just a little proud that we could make this happen. "Stealing words from a certain songwriter, this is a light that should never go out..." Phil added: "We have nearly 100 Centres for Warmth in the North West, and more than 450 across our wider UK footprint. "It's a scheme, funded through an allowance agreed with our regulator Ofgem, that sees us partner with existing, established community centres, to provide advice and support to those most in need. "This is a win-win, because it helps us reach more and more people with energy efficiency, gas safety, and financial advice and support - something we'll now be able to offer through Salford Lads and Girls Club." 📸 Photos by Oliver Bowden, showing Chris Brierley (Salford Lads and Girls Club) showing Phil Burrows (Cadent) around the building yesterday. This #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay, we want to take the opportunity to say thank you to our over 40 partners, who have allowed us to provide energy efficiency, benefit support and financial advice to over one million households across our networks in the last year alone. Our purpose is to keep people warm while protecting the planet and a huge part of this, is helping those living in fuel poverty through the support and actions of our amazing partners. We spend, on average, £130k a day on fuel poverty initiatives, but this is a small price to pay to help people feel safe and warm in their homes. We’re incredibly proud of all the work our teams at Cadent, the Cadent Foundation and our fabulous partners have accomplished and are excited to see how, through strong collaboration, we will continue to support communities long into the future. Today we launch our annual ‘Energy Diaries: Voices of the Future’ research, shining a spotlight on young people aged 18-30, to uncover their perspectives on energy in collaboration with YMCA England & Wales and Thinks Insight & Strategy. Some of the key findings from the research include👇 👉 71% of young people say that heating is now a ‘luxury’ rather than a basic service for some people. 👉 59% of people aged 18-30 said that they are cutting down their energy usage to save on cost. 👉 70% also think under 30s are financially struggling more than generations before them (compared to 54% of those aged 51+). View our full findings and hear more from our diarists here: https://lnkd.in/eFscbBw8

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that you can't see, hear, smell or taste but if you breathe in even a small amount it could be deadly. CO poisoning symptoms can be similar to a flu or hangover, so it's important to get a CO alarm that alerts you if it is present in your home. If you suspect CO, - Open all doors and windows - Go outside into fresh air - Call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999* *All calls are recorded and may be monitored.

A few weeks ago, John Batterson spoke at the Hazards 34 conference for the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) about our DPLA project, the transition to observed measurement and impacts on emissions: “It was great to share the progress the gas distribution industry is making towards its vision of zero operational carbon emissions at HAZ34. DPLA is a flagship project that cements its commitments to find and fix sources of emissions with greater intelligence. The day at the conference was really interesting, with a range of topics from hydrogen plant safety to planning and designing plant and equipment for more extreme weather events.” We look forward to continuing to disseminate valuable knowledge from our project to the industry, fostering greater understanding, collaboration and innovation.
